I could rant again about my disgust for SculptureWalk, but instead I’m going to encourage everyone to hang out dowtown this weekend. Last year during the installation I got to meet one of the artist’s from Hawaii and we had a great conversation about the war and our inept president. So hangout DT this weekend and you may meet a cool artist (or a lame one for that matter). The one thing about artists, whether they suck or not, they are still interesting to talk to.

that guy was great. tim garcia, his studio is in maui at makawau and his family had actually lived in sd at one time so he and his mother came here to visit and see the state.

i was hoping my husbands aunt in maui could hook up with him, but i think she’s in love with a ghost.

I hope not the Ghost of Dude, he’s married.

Bobbi, I like SW, I just think it is ran too secretly by a bunch of arrogant assholes and I think the whole exhibit should be in Fawick Park around David, a Sculpture Garden if you will, an actual destination.

BTW, Bobbi, How’s your buddy FolkArts doing? Saw he won a SDNA award. I miss kicking him around.

yeah. haven’t seen jason, i think you beat him into submission for a good long time.

i am waiting for the day when you meet a rich and/or successful business person that you LIKE. that’s what i’m waiting for.

good idea about putting SW in Fawick.

The Ghost of Dude has never haunted Hawaii.
I agree that a sculpture garden at Fawick Park would be much more of a destination type deal than the walk. Maybe they could solicit more donations and have a sculpture trail leading to the park.
BTW, aren’t they tearing up Phillips Ave. between 10th and 12th?

you can’t shop in fawick park, duh.

the sculptures are sponsored by the business’ they sit in front of or by other area sponsors.

next year we get new pavement on phillips so this summer you can still sit outside at stogees and drink your scotch and not get dirt in it.

Bobbi- I don’t have a problem with successful people, in fact I’m friends with quite a few, I have a problem with pricks. I have never told Paul or Jim how to run their respective private enterprises, but since I help fund the Washington Pavilion and SW through my tax dollars I have a right to dissent the programs without being smeared and harrassed by them. If they want to treat their employees that way, that’s their deal, but they can’t treat a taxpayer who makes these art orgs possible that way. They have worked in the private sector so long, they have no clue what public service means. I commend them for volunteering their time but that doesn’t give them a free pass to ignore the will of the people. Obviously not everyone’s opinion is valuable, but I think I have been around visual art long enough to know what I’m talking about at least some of the time. And to be publicly humiliated because of my (honest) opinion is uncalled for. Like I said, successful or not, they are jerks.

One of the main reasons SW will never make it to Fawick Park is because they sold SW to the city by saying it is a tool to promote business DT (though a majority of people tour it on Sundays when parking is free and the businesses are closed). They also receive sponsorship from the businesses, if it were to move to Fawick, they might not get that. I think if all the Sculptures were in Fawick, it would be a pretty amazing site to see, and actually a better tourist attraction then it’s current setup. But what do I know, I have only been a lover of visual art my whole life while Jim Clark has ran a utility company most of his. Ahem.

Not sure when they are tearing up the street, I think they convinced the city to not do it until 2009.

Glad to hear my scotch won’t be getting dirty. I’ll commence drinking it and stinking up the sidewalk with a cloud of cigar smoke at the next opportunity.
I think the SW would work at Fawick if businesses and individuals outside the DT area sponsored the sculptures. Getting people in town to see it would still bring in more business. What family from NW Iowa who comes to SF for a weekend shopping/sightseeing trip doesn’t eventually make it to Mallsville? They might find the DT area peaceful in comparison.

I actually came up with the idea after attending an ADA awareness class. They talked about making it easier for people with wheelchairs to get around. If they put the granite pedestals along the sidewalk paths in Fawick it would make it very accessible for people in wheelchairs. Not that DT is not easy to get around in a wheelchair, I just think having it all in one place would be beneficial for many reasons, including insurance and security, and having David as the centerpiece would be cool.

i’d also like it if they’d plant a couple more TREES in fawick while they are at it. look how d**n barren it looks.
