I’m sure you noticed that Rounds didn’t make one single cut to tourism in his budget. His argument is tourism brings in $26 million to the state (I would like to know whose ass he pulled that number out of). For the sake of the argument, let’s suppose that’s true, but who’s to say if we cut the tourism budget or even did no advertising at all except on inexpensive websites, people wouldn’t come to visit our state anyway? I mean, how many people who take summer vacations don’t know where Mt. Rushmore is? If they don’t know, they don’t deserve to visit anyway.

5 Thoughts on “SD is the Rushmore state . . . but what does that mean? We better advertise and let the rest of the country know.

You’d be surprised. Ever watch “Jaywalking”? There were people on the last show I saw who couldn’t locate the US on a world map.
    People are stupid.

  2. That’s what the googles are for!

If you type in ‘Mt. Rushmore location’ there is 1,650,000 results! We need a department of tourism for that!!

With the economy the way it is and getting worse who says there will be enough money for people to take vacations? It could well be tourism will be way down this year. We have to find more to depend on than tourism and sales tax.

We’re actually in a pretty good position for tourism in a down economy. Vacations in SD are pretty cheap.
All you need is a vehicle and a tent and you can take a week-long vacation in the hills for a few hundred bucks and see all the sights.

  5. I’ll agree with Ghost on that, that is why tourism is so popular in SD, and another reason why we don’t need to advertise that much. Like I said in a different post, bloggers give more perspective on current events than the MSM does, and it is all for free on the internets. I think the tourism department should concentrate on websites.
