I had to laugh after reading this fundraising letter for Dave Knudson on Pity Pat Powers website
. Some of the commenters over there have poked fun at Thoms for his writing skills, but I am convinced that Dave’s wife wrote the letter.

Dave is one of the most intelligent people I’ve met.
Unfortunately, he has the disadvantage of being from Sioux Falls, which means the small town brigade won’t look at him as a ‘real’ South Dakotan. Retarded.
When we elect ‘real’ South Dakotans, we get guys like Rounds and Janklow.

I have met Dave at a art reception years ago, he came off as being ‘squishy’. Ick. But you are right, if Dave can’t prove he will be a governor for the working class, farmers and ranchers, he’s doomed.

Not what I meant at all. If he can’t get past the infantile anti-Sioux Falls bias the rest of the state has and the anti-intellectual rednecks that populate the state, he’s doomed.
I don’t recall what Rounds’ working-class creds were. In fact, I don’t remember hearing much about him at allduring the primaries in 2002. He won because he’s a republican, not connected heavily with Janklow (like Barnett) and not from SF (like Kirby).
That and the pissing match between Barnett and Kirby was unbearable, especially when they started getting into Kirby’s supposed skin tissue selling business. Rounds just wore denim shirts and smiled and he was a shoe in. It also didn’t help that Barnett’s whole family kept writing letters to the editor about how great he was (using their married names) like people didn’t know.
Not all South Dakotans are dumb rednecks if they don’t live in SF. I have always said one of the smartest men I have ever known was my grandpa. He could build, cook, grow, fix anything and only went to (6th?) grade.
I just think that people are sick of the same old BS lawyer politicians, and that will work against Dave.

I didn’t mean to imply that, in fact, this city has more than its share of dumb rednecks.
But the redneck vote is strong in this state.
It reminds me a little of “Idiocracy” sometimes…
