I would argue that both Slayer and Acid Bath's tunes tunes ARE easily recognized in the first few seconds by anyone that calls themself a fan. I would also argue that Slayer has influenced just as many acts as the Smiths or RHCP, but most never made it out of their parent's basement. That is a good point, Sy. The Smiths are on the same level as only a handful of bands. Bands that you recognize their sound within the first couple bars, even before the lead sings, and it doesn't matter if it's an early tune or one of their last. Joy Division, the Ramones, REM, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sex Pistols, the Clash, Queen etc. Like those bands, they influenced so many acts across so many genre's it's impossible to quantify.
