Theresa Stehly writes a great letter about the snowgates. But more importantly she touches on priorities;

The issue of cost concerning snow gates is about priorities. We spend hundreds of thousands of tax dollars each year on consultants. We spend millions of tax dollars each year on subsidies for facilities and special-interest projects that many citizens never will use. And sometimes we spend money on frills such as $33,000 for the city calendar last year and the $50,000 art wall at the Falls.

Trying a few snow gates for $18,000 and seeing for ourselves if they will help citizens make sense to me.

Trying new progressive ideas is what will keep Sioux Falls vibrant and strong as we work on customer service for all people.

I have often argued that it is more about public safety then anything (eliminating dangerous windrows). And even though the cost would be more for the city initially, it would probably SAVE citizens money in repairs to their autos. I once had to drop $75 to fix a power steering pump after getting my car trapped in a windrow.

Yeah, really, just how much does a heart attack run these days? Is it as much as a set of sweet calendars? More? Sorry gramps, we’re fiscal conservatives in this town…now start shovelin’!

Good heavens anominous, you sound like a real grumpy old man. If the city fathers were really fiscal conservatives they would quit yapping about an event center that they don’t have the cash to build. If they can afford that they can afford these gates. Have you ever shoveled the drifts that snow plows pile in driveways and at the end of sidewalks? If you haven’t, shut your trap.

  3. Red- He was being sarcastic. We really need to go over this sometimes.

I could understand if we were a town, poor to the hilt, but when we spend millions for monkey crappers and we say “No money for snow removal.” I just shake my head.

I think I am gonna make a snowgate hat and wear it all over town.

  4. I will look kingsley and priestley and you will know it well.

  5. This company in Canada sells snowgates so they must be able to handle snow. They get lots of snow. There is a video, looks like a good deal to me.

  6. Those gates look like they could handle 40″ of snow.

    Ha ha!

  8. What a crock. They don’t work and have been proved so in other communities.

There are real problems in SF city government. Snowgates don’t even make the top 100

  9. It’s not a problem. It’s called customer service. I personally don’t pay taxes to build monkey crappers and locker rooms for tennis players. I pay taxes to provide services to me, like plowing the streets properly so I don’t damage my vehicle.

Hey Vernon – you should post under your real name for a change.

  11. It’s not Vernon.

I was being sarcastic. You know… if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck etc.

His statement is a flat out lie however – Theresa has done the homework and found snow gates continue to be used in many cities with no issues, so if there is anything “proved” it is that snow gates actually work.

John is just wrong. And so is Vernon.

  13. I figured as much, but it doesn’t mean it can’t be one of his supporters.
