“OH, SHIT!” (SOS, Jason Gant, KDLT image)

It is about time a legitimate newspaper in SD call a spade, a spade;

Gant said he asked Powers to close down the Dakota Campaign Store because it had become a distraction.

It’s more than a distraction; it’s a conflict of interest.

Yeah, no kidding!? I love how the MSM media in SD besides the RCJ, Mercer, and an Argus ‘mandated’ Blog have’nt touched this with a 10-Foot Pole. I’m not trying to get ‘cool points’ on this issue. The blatant conflicts and corruption is so obvious, you would think any, and every media source in SD would be terrorizing the AG’s office for a decision from a speedy investigation.

Nope. Not how it works in SD. We must be polite. And ignorant. And subservient.

I will say this, if nothing happens from the AG’s investigation, that won’t be the last of it. There are many national news organizations salivating at the chance to expose the ‘good old boy’ system in SD. I would prefer we stay modest and handle this internally, but, yah never know.

    Wonder when the PayWall Leader will pull their collective heads out of their behinds and push this issue. The Rapid City Journal has always been a more interesting paper. I wonder when they will be expanding east to help us?

    I disagree. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. We can’t come clean in SD unlessed shamed to do so. Let the national spotlight aim on like a laser and watch the cockroaches flee.

    Sometimes, too often, blogs have to open the curtains to let a little, or a lot of sunshine in. It seems to be the only way some SD mainstream media can see.

    Good for you, Southdacola! And thank you.

  4. From a foot soldier, seems paranoia has set in at the SOS’s office;

    Montgomery does not understand how cookies work. He seems to think Gant and Powers are somehow tracking him through the cookies.

    Powers is very likely in his office looking at IP addresses of every query coming into the SOS office. A webmaster has the ability to have notices dropped on his/her desktop the moment any newspaper’s IP in the state queries for information.

    This is some of the fear we all should have with the Gant / PP combination in the office. There is a lot of confidential information stored in the SOS office files and servers. If a query is sent to the office, the webmaster often is the first to know. It is the webmaster’s job to fulfill the request or pass the request on to the person best able to fill in the data requested. So if Montgomery, Mercer or SouthDacola asks for data from an office with a lot of paper records to research, a person has to get involved. No ‘confidential’ or ‘personal’ data involving members of the GOP run office are going to let out anything until they can ‘fix’ it. Also depending on PP’s security level with the data, he could backdate anything. The only way to actually find out when the data got changed would require researching the backup tapes kept off-site.

    Current web programming uses session cookies to keep track of your current requests and order information. Long-term cookies saved on keep track of all your activity on their site (this cookie should always be set to ‘0 days’). The long-term cookie is the one which can hurt the web surfer / researcher by letting unscrupulous websites steal your identity. It would not surprise me the reporters have their computers configured incorrectly by supplying their name. domain and cookie history information readily accessible to the likes PP and Gant.

    Just remember, you cannot scour the internet via computer discreetly if you give every webmaster your name and address. I am sure the SOS office has scouring software setup to scan for certain queries or from certain addresses.
