Andy once said he intended to be the straight man and leave the humor to all the other characters. Don Knots actually hired himself for the show, he and Andy were comedy partners of sort in New York in the early ’50s.
Would love to read a biography on Andy Griffith. I’m sure all was not all hometown as we saw on TV. There were a couple of episodes of Andy Griffith where he wore a bandage. The story goes he was pissed because something was not going right on the set. He punched a door in anger and they wrote the bandage into the script as “rounding up a criminal”.
The 2nd best thing to ever come out of North Carolina! Rest in Peace, Andy. Thanks for all the great laughs!!
He played a really scary, creepy musician in a movie early in his career. But I loved The Andy Griffith Show. (Except Goober.)
Don Knots kicks ass, he made that show. Andy was great in Matlock (I think that was the show 🙂

I was a big fan of The Darlings (aka the Dillards).
Ernst T. Bass and Lumpy Rutherford (Leave It to Beaver) are two of the greatest characters in American sitcom history.
Andy Griffith RIP…..
I like Arnold the pig on Green Acres.
Andy also said it was hard work to appear so simple. I wonder the same for Gant and PP.
