I’m not making Meth, though it would probably make me feel a lot better now.

It is no secret our State Legislature wastes a lot of time on pointless bills, and they are at it again.

They want to put you in a private database for the pharma companies to track sales of cold medicine, which in no way stops meth production (you can make meth from several substances besides cold medicine).

Secondly, they want a statewide ban on texting, which is not needed, because distracted driving laws already cover texting and driving recklessly.

This is all a distraction. Why? First of all, our state legislature doesn’t have a clue, that is why they go running to daddy (ALEC) anytime they need legislation. They even go as far as defending the very organization that is funded by big pharma (the ones that want the database) saying they ‘teach’ legislators (more like brainwash).

Why not have a bill that requires all handgun owners be registered on a public website? Wouldn’t you like to know if your neighbor had a handgun? And the numbers don’t lie, handguns in our country kill more people then any other country in the world. If we are worried about texting and meth production, shouldn’t we be worried about people who carry dangerous weapons?

Oh, I know the argument, not every one that carries a handgun is dangerous. Couldn’t agree more. Just like everyone who texts doesn’t do it while driving and everyone who buys cold medicine isn’t making meth.

Double standard if you ask me. But big Pharma could care less about gun ownership.

The legislature needs to focus on more important things that actually make our state better, like bringing in living wage jobs, ending the food tax and funding education properly.

It’s time that Pierre pulled ALEC out of their asses and did the work of the people.

13 Thoughts on “ALEC, guns, cold medicine and cell phones

  1. You talk about distractions, but I’ve yet to see any evidence from you to support the statement that “big pharma” would have access to this database nor any evidence on how it would benefit them. I shot holes through that conspiracy theory last time it was brought up… but conveniently you didn’t even attempt to fill them.

As to a double standard, why are you (sarcasticly I assume) suggesting a public registration process for handguns while ignoring the proposal for a tracking system for pseudoephedrine is NOT public and has never been suggested to be public?

I’m not going to defend ALEC, but there are bound to be cases where one of their ideas actually makes sense. I have no doubt the drug companies want to implement a tracking system – because they know if they can’t stop the flow of their products into meth labs someone eventually is going to either A) require prescriptions for pseudoephedrine, or B) ban pseudoephedrine outright. Both of these would be disasterous for the companies that produce these medications which is the one and only reason they care.

P.S. – As a person who seems very concerned about civil rights, I’m surprised you didn’t realize that although we do have a right to bear arms, our bill of rights did leave out the part where we have a right to pseudoephedrine.

  2. It is a OTC drug, wouldn’t that make us have a right to it like lotion or toothpaste? If it is so dangerous, it should be a prescription.

Still confused about your first part, big pharma is paying for the maintenance of the database, it would be safe to assume they will have access to it.

  3. Never a good thing when government makes a list of purchases and the people who are making those purchases….

  4. I agree with Matt and I also agree about the stupid useless things our legislature wants to control. They should learn some self control when they want to control things.

I’ve bitched about this for years.

I can buy a season’s worth of shotgun shells in one purchase, yet the government limits me to 15 allergy pills every two weeks ragweed season be-damned (and I have to provide ID and signature for the pills, but not the shells).

    It’s pointless and asinine.

  6. Again I point out you don’t want to establish a NyQiul buyers list BUT you want the federal government to be your single payer health care provider. You got no compass man.

I’m not attempting to defend the folks at Pierre but do you have any evidence that ALEC is behind this?

  7. BTW…. Why would “big pharma” need the state to collect purchasing data? You pay with a credit card don’t ya!

You’re a chronically unhappy bitch, Scott. All you do is bitch and bitch and butch and bitch. Run for office and champion some good ideas. That would be commendable. Until then you are just noise.

Noise that I come to this site for. The Argus & TV news have become unconscious and a waste of my time. Blog is where you find facts from the best reporters, the public. Quintan Tarantino is suing a blog Corp with 7 renowned sites. His subject was exposed well before press release. In other words, the news came out as it happened. What’s especially good about blog is you get all sides. You’re not force fed what someone wants you to believe.

  10. Google it, it is ALEC model legislation, that is how it got ramrodded through 29 other states.

Hilarious, I think my ‘bitching’ is justified on this one. With all the hoopla about the NSA, I think it would be safe to say, we don’t also need to be on Big Pharma’s radar screen. Big Pharma and ALEC are the biggest opposition to the single-payer system because the medical industrial complex and Pharma would have to negotiate prices, they will pull no stops to stop any form of socialized medicine, including starting a database of people who buy OTC drugs.

3 tourists unintentionally shot during Old West shootout reenactment in South Dakota
John Ellis, an optometrist from Pittsburgh, PA, was vacationing with his wife and two daughters in Hill City, South Dakota. The family was watching a reenactment of a Wild West shootout when Ellis fell to the ground, clutching his bloodied elbow. “I was shot in the forearm, and it went through the other side of my elbow,” Ellis told reporters, “I had surgery around midnight Friday to remove bone and lead fragments.”
Two other tourists were shot and injured during the show. Carrol Knutson of Minnesota was shot in the leg and Jose Pruneda of Nebraska suffered a minor flesh wound.
The Sheriff’s office has not released details from its investigation, including refusing to speculate on how normally blank cartridges could have caused the injuries. This is not the first time someone has been injured watching the mock gun battle by the Dakota Wild Bunch Reinactors. In 2002, a woman survived after being shot in the head at the show.
