Yesterday during the informational meeting councilor Erpenbach told the rest of the council to ‘tone down’ the conversation because we shouldn’t FEAR the homeless. First off, Michelle, there was an incident there yesterday. As a county official said to me yesterday, something needs to be done before someone gets seriously hurt or killed, and I agree 100%. But apparently according to the city attorney the Parks Board has to make the decision to ban alchohol, and they can’t have a special meeting to do so. Bullshit. The city wants them at this park instead of wandering around downtown.

When arriving at work this morning the staff noticed an empty park. Hmmmm, wonder what might be going on? It’s now 10am and the park now only has 4 visitors. Did the mayor not like the publicity? Did the council (in the mayor’s presence) and media ask too many questions on Tuesday?

Where did the mayor store all the usual park residents last night? Did they put them in jail overnight for safe keeping? Did the police show up and just chase the homeless away?

The mayor’s 3 port-a-potties were placed there by his direction. He personally went to the park after they were setup to make sure the homeless knew he did it. He tried to get thank yous and compliments from the people there. One of the park residents offered him a beer. He declined.

It appears the mayor is allowing and accepting the Huetherville Park activity so it does not happen in front of Cherapa or Hilton.

I can see why the officers would want them in this park vs. hiding out in the alleys and abandoned buildings. It is a lot easier to police it when it is in the open. The things happening in the park were happening before you just didn’t hear about it because it was not visable. Now that people are witnessing it first hand it is a problem. Wake up folks, the problem has always been here. People are going to drink and socialize it is just a matter of when and where. Let’s just make sure the rules get enforced.

All it takes to hold a “special” Park Board meeting is a 24 hour notification to the public of date, time, location and agenda.

My guess is the Park Board (and Mayor) do not want to discuss this issue PUBLICLY. As usual, they are probably discussing it and making a decision on their advice to the Mayor and Council in one of their secret committees. Better known as BAU (Business As Usual).

MMM was on Belfrage Monday, he bragged extensively about how he was having a meeting “IN HIS OFFICE”, Tuesday, with the good folks who congregate at Van Eps Park.

Now, Wednesday, the Park is empty. Wonder what kind of a deal he cut with them!!?
