UPDATE: I just heard that SMG did NOT ask the School District to move the game. SMG felt that the District decided on their own to move the game. Not sure if an official from the city pressured them or not?

I got an anonymous tip today that the City is asking the School District to re-schedule the football game (Roosevelt’s Homecoming) scheduled at Howard Wood on October 2nd.

The reason the City is making this request is that the existing parking at the Events Center/Howard Wood may not support both the Elton John concert and Roosevelt’s Homecoming football game.

I guess we will see if the School District caves on the request . . .

According to their calendar, the change has not been made yet.

14 Thoughts on “UPDATE: Is the Elton John concert trumping Roosevelt’s Homecoming?

The people at the Event Center/City should do better planning. It isn’t right to expect a previously scheduled event at Howard Wood, just because some people don’t know how to plan. I though the same thing last fall when football games had to be relocated. Shame on the Event Center/City.

Which event, a local football game or a concert with a legendary singer, would draw more revenues? You know the answer which one city would choose.

Personally, the concert should be rescheduled because Roosevelt had the date first.

Neither should be rescheduled, we were told the area could handle the volume if multiple events are going on, so prove it to us.

  4. There’s little to no flexibility on a concert date. That’s the open day available, so they have to take it or leave it. I don’t care either way, but I bet there would be a bigger outcry if it came out that the show wasn’t booked because of a football game.

L3wis is right. Nothing should be rescheduled. Assuming the rumor is true, the city should not be asking anyone to reschedule anything. They said many times there was adequate parking for events even if they had multiple venues booked. And they’ve touted at various meetings about how great its worked (parking) when they’ve had all the buildings ‘rockin’ (their words not mine) in recent months. So by their own admission there is no reason to need to reschedule anything. If they have asked, its wrong.

Well, Greg since the calendar for Howard Wood hasn’t changed yet, I would assume this will remain a rumor 🙂

I wouldn’t want to tell my kid his high school homecoming is cancelled because the city needs parking for an aging over weight has been English rock diva.

  9. In this City if residents and visitors can’t park at the front door then they are inconvenienced. Get used to the congestion people, we are growing at such a rate we will not be able to do anything about it and moreover we will not be able to stop it. We, in essence, are a victim of our own success.

If you are not happy with the progress, and some can argue that it is not progress, there are other communities looking for new residents. Ask yourself, what have you done to make it better, what difference have you made? All I read is bitch, bitch and more bitching! Trust me the “kids” will survive the minor inconvenience of walking the extra distance to attend their homecoming and not give it a thought.

Oh by the way, if the Denny had been built large enough to accommodate an indoor football field there would not have been a conflict, it would have been booked previous to the concert, but then Howard Wood would have had to go. Instead we spent $7 million +/- in renovations. Money well spent????

  10. What does the district say about why it was moved?

  11. Yes, is this Sir Elton John?….Could you be a dove and pick another week swing back threw the Dakotas? We got a homecoming to contend with..

The city should have been straight forward and told the school district to think about relocating rather than remodeling. But there is no straight forward or integrity in this city these days.

People have been parking on empty lots near the old Moose Lodge. I’d say it’s time for a privateer entrepeneur to build a commercial parking garage. Something like Yellow Dot near Omaha Airport. It could be 4 stories covered parking with shuttles to the airport and events (arena, downtown, fairgrounds). It’s common sense the city would never think of.

^^ I would like to take every penny I have and short sell this idea. Watching it fail would be the easiest money I ever made. This thing would be 95% empty 95% of the time.

#13: your estimate would be more like 99% of the time which is why Daily Spin’s idea sounds good at first but comparing the use of Eppley Airfield’s parking needs and the EC is not valid.

Suspect there will be some traffic problems, but not as bad as some think.

Look for hotels and some eating/drinking establishments to offer package deals & shuttle service to help with the parking hassle.

Look to Lincoln, NE during football season. Grand Forks, ND during hockey season…
