First off I find it a little odd that the 1st reading of the pool rate increases was posted on Friday before the Parks Board actually votes on the rate increases as an entire body, in public at their 4 PM meeting tomorrow at Great Bear. (AgendaParkBoard 06-16-15

A forgone conclusion I guess.

I also find the Argus editorial yesterday against eliminating the FREE passes interesting. I think many people in the city administration are trying to distract the conversation about the poor kids losing passes so they can sneak the gigantic rate increases by.

Sorry, this is all a part of the conversation.

For those of you that can afford to pay for pool passes, God Bless You, I also think you can afford increases, but they should be reasonable. Imagine if your healthcare insurance provider told you there would be a 400% increase in 3 years. You would literally sh*t a brick.

The focus of the conversation should be reasonable rate increases and finding a way to subsidize free passes.

I advise the city council to not get distracted by the FREE pool pass discussion, and consider ALL people affected by this measure, rich and poor.

I’m personally aware of a single mom of 4. Their summer was pool passes. Otherwise, they live in a subsidized apartment without a yard. I’m not related but I help some with getting them a zoo pass for the year. Citizens must realize that the rich (like Huether) have one spoiled child but there’s mass fallout that will become catastrophic failure of what has been a valued midwest culture. The rich have destroyed familys and place the tax burden of unnecessary edifices on those that struggle to survive.

If I were to purchase a pool pass I would expect to be able to use it at either an outdoor pool or the indoor pool. However, I believe the indoor pool costs more than the outdoor pool pass and that they are separate passes.

Do you suppose there might be a bit of planned exclusion through price to help control the patrons of the indoor pool?

  4. Prediction: After the rate increase and the lower number of season passes are sold in 2016, the total revenue from passes sold will be nearly the same as it is now.

Lessons in economics have been long needed for this cities government officials.

My family would be willing to pay $100 a year for a family pass. Anything more than that you can blow it out your ass. Their is absolutely no reason there can’t be a yearly rate and a reduced summer only rate.

This would be worthy of a petition process and public vote. It would be important that the city attorney not prepare the wording so we’re sure what we’re voting for. Let the raise haopen then post petition constables at the entrance to pools and in the lots where parents drop of their kids.

to paraphrase stoo pid stu, anyone who believed that the indoor pool was for “everybody” is an idiot.

we were told that we needed the indoor pool because not everyone could afford to belong to a private club/wellness center my wife and I pay $20 per month to belong to Sanford Wellness- this is admittedly after taking advantage of her employer’s offer to cover part of the cost if we use on a regular (8 times a month) basis we get the pool for less than the cost of two adult passes as proposed ($300) plus we get the gym, aerobic equipment, weights, classes, etc. who can afford to “belong” to the city’s indoor pool

Matt, I knew all along this pool was being built for competitive swimmers NOT recreational or fitness swimmers. It’s a ruse. The special interests win again. It still would have been a helluva a lot cheaper to partner with Sanford at the sports complex on a competitive pool out there.
