I am actually glad to hear this. Like I said at the council meeting, I hope the place is so successful we don’t have to subsidize it with tax dollars. As I have often argued with public projects, if there is a true need, they will be self sufficient. It looks like the indoor pool is heading in that direction;

The Midco Aquatic Center is just one week removed from its opening day- and already the center is surpassing expectations.

In the first week-the water center drew in over 2,000 people for a swim and 600 others in for a tour.

“We are trying to really reach all different kinds of demographics and programs so that we have a lot things going on and a lot of things happening to encourage people to come join us at the Midco Aquatic Center,” said recreation coordinator, Jean Pearson.

Many people in the community say the $24 million indoor facility was a great investment for Sioux Falls.

So with this great success, will the propaganda wing of the Mayor’s office stop peddling the lies that got us here?

15 Thoughts on “Midco Aquatic Center Big Success so far

It is foolhardy to predict the success or not of this taxpayer-owned facility based on one week of attendance numbers!

Sounds like something Mike would do.

Now the mayor must find other recreation projects to waste tens of millions on. Why don’t I feel the success? Probably because there are so many children that go to bed hungry while the upper class bathes in luxury, splendor, and excess.

2016 rates for an adult are $120. In another 2 months, that rate for a winter pass will be $145. In 2018 it will be $170. By 2020, just three short years from now, adult winter passes will very likely be twice what they are today. Admission prices are one issue. Another is this. I would be interested only in swimming the 50 meter lanes as a form of exercise thru the winter months. Will I be able use the 50 meter lanes when I have time, or do I have to work that part in around the snofox swim team schedule. Let’s say, for arguments sake, the lanes are open to the public in a given time frame. Lane rental is $10 an hour, per lane. Does that mean the only real attraction at snofox AC, the 50 meter lanes, are available ONLY UPON RENTAL? Makes as much sense as the Sport Bowl charging a seasonal membership fee, then another charge when you get thru the door to rent a lane.

Will the SAC be for everyone? Not really. In a few years it will be for about 10% of the population who can afford it.

  4. TP – I know, I figured there would be a press release about this, but I assumed it wouldn’t be for about 30 days. We both know it is just a bunch of looky loos right now. But like I said above, I hope it remains popular.

  5. Warren, I agree, and It really chaps my hide that the swim teams have so much control of the 50 meter pool. I’m still waiting to hear what their donation towards the facility is or it’s value.

  6. are for 23 wis i see you are neutral om the other website

  7. Moses, when I wrote that post, I haven’t researched 23 enough, so instead of saying YES or NO on the measure, I didn’t say anything. I do support it now that I know what it is about.

The VA will take it when the city must cut the budget. It’ll eventually be for what it was intended, water therapy. Meanwhile it’ll tame the mayor’s ego and insanity until he’s replaced in 2018.

Warren, Don Kearney, Director of Park and Rec, told the public (during informational meetings) the 50 meter pool can be divided into segments and at least one segment would be available to the public AT ALL TIMES.

  10. anon- just chalk it up to another lie we were told.

Anon. At least one segment? Out of how many segments? If snofox is using 9 of 10 lanes, I guess that means If I’m there I can still be “lucky” enough to rent that one lane for an additional $10 an hour on top of admission fees? Ohhhhh….lucky me.

  13. ksfy did a story sunday night on how the parking lot is already full. we had lunch at grille 26 on sunday, and people were filling up the park ridge lot and walking across the street. how long before the city decides they need to take more of the park for parking lots?

  14. scott, that is why many who supported an indoor pool felt Spellerberg was a stupid location. No room for parking and no room for expansion.
