It’s kind of like an advisory vote, similar to the Events Center vote, it really has no clout. Maybe if you lived in California, New York or Florida . . . uh, maybe not Florida. Now I’m not saying NOT to vote. There are many important ballot initiatives and local races that you SHOULD weigh in on. But since South Dakota only has 3 electoral votes that ALWAYS go towards Republicans (heck, even our governor, Dennis Doofus is voting for Trump even though he denounces him as the nominee, still don’t get that one).

Like I said, if we were a bigger state with more political diversity, it would matter.

But what cracks me up is to listen to people who actually believe their vote matters. Just listen to this podcast of Belfrage. These people act like they need to vote for Trump, even if he is a disgusting pig and crooked business man to stop Hillary. Hey McFly, first off, you don’t have to vote for either candidate, you can leave it blank, and guess what, Trump will still win in South Dakota. Heck, Satan could be the Republican nominee for president, and would still win in South Dakota. Secondly, I have never understood defending presidential candidates even when they do ridiculous things, like both Hillary and Donald have done. Neither of them know you, and probably neither of them even care about you.

This is what has often chapped my hide about listening to these voters, mental health issues aside, I think Hillary refers to them as deplorables (I thought she was being nice) they get all worked up about the presidential election, a position they really don’t decide yet don’t show up to local school board and city elections (you know, the group of elected officials that determine most of the taxes you pay). Pay is so piss poor in South Dakota, most of us pay very little in Federal Income Taxes. Does it really matter, even if your voted counted, who we send to Washington? Just look at John Thune for example, he has literally done nothing during his terms. Don’t believe me? Has life in South Dakota gotten better for you because of Federal policies since Thune has been in office? Nope. EB-5 was a complete disaster and all of the Federal Money that was supposed to go towards Gear Up got stolen. And how is that Medicare expansion working out? The Feds don’t care about us.

So the next time there is a school board or municipal election, I want to see at least a 50% turnout (last election was 11%) and people calling in to local radio shows defending local candidates. Hillary is a crook and Trump is a loser and a crook. Who cares. Go do something more constructive with your life.

13 Thoughts on “Your vote for President in South Dakota doesn’t matter, really it doesn’t

The electoral college was created because the vote couldn’t be counted quick enough from distant states. That was the time when mail was a month by pony express. With computers and the internet, it should be eliminated. It’s possible this time that Trump wins when in fact Hillary wins the popular vote by double digits.

  3. The Electoral College was not created because of tabulation of the vote count. Back when it was created the Pony Express didn’t exist, nor did it for about 70 years. Inauguration Day was about four months after election day back then, too. In fact that wasn’t even brought up by anybody at the Constitutional Convention. The issue was primarily about the power of the big states vs. those of the smaller states. Having a discussion about the EC and the electoral process is worthy of study, but it should focus on the merits and history and not misinformation like post #1.

  4. I heard the show and I’m disgusted to share the same air as some who called in. Some moron talked about night of the long knives and castorations. Belfrage has hit rock bottom.

Too bad all the Trump fools cant be put on a watch list.

  5. Marc, you also have to take into account that the presidential election is usually predicted before the polls close in SD. I have often said that the TV stations should not be allowed to call it until polls in all 50 states have closed.

  6. how can satan be the republican nominee, when hillary is satan?

  7. The networks have agreed to not share exit polling data until the affected state’s polls have closed. The actual vote results for each state are reported as soon as they are available. South Dakota, like most states, has real-time updating available on the Secretary of State’s web site.

To suggest that Northern Marianas’ vote totals shouldn’t be reported until Hawaii’s polls close (to use the first and last polls closing times – http://www.thegreenpapers.com/G16/closing.phtml?format=gc) would require a news embargo of many hours. Media wouldn’t agree, and any attempt to use legal action to stop reporting would likely violate the First Amendment.

  8. Michael, I agree. I just think it is funny how the MSM fights over who can predict the presidency first. I actually think this race will be closer then predicted, but still think Hillary will pull it off. It will be interesting to watch if Johnson, Stein and the other 3rd party candidates can pull 20% of the vote collectively. It won’t surprise me if Johnson gets between 12-15%.

  9. I hope you convince a lot of people not to vote. Every one of them you convince not to vote doubles the power of MY vote. Thank you very much.

  10. Johnson and Stein COMBINED will et less to 10%. You’re on if you want to put something on it.

In South Dakota, Johnson and Stein combined might break 10%, but I would be surprised if that happens nationally.

Johnson really ruined himself with the “Aleppo” moment and his inability to name any foreign leaders.

If the election were held today Hillary would win, but there is still a month to go. I expect election night to be a nail biter. Trump’s core support is still intact. Hillary is currently garnering a large portion of the past undecided voters, but it will be interesting to see if that support is part of a resolve and truly committed or merely a safe haven until there is reason to support Trump over Hillary because of some new allegation(s) or “October Surprise.”

Let us face it, after the Access Hollywood tape, the fact that Trump has held on to his base, held his own in the debate and Hillary’s inability to lay a knockout blow against Trump in the last debate should be disconcerting to all of us who are backing Hillary…. We still have a month to go….

I also think that the precarious position that politicians like Thune and Ryan have put themselves into relative to who they are supporting for President all works to Trump’s advantage in terms of rhetoric, holding onto his base, and claiming he (Trump) is the true agent of change.

Thune and Ryan are like the politician who said he was opposed to the war, before he was for it. Accept in the case of Thune and Ryan, they are against it again or in the case of Trump, I think they are for him again….????

Ljl, I have been listening to a few of belfrages podcasts lately. Not because I think there is anything there to be learned, but because I am trying to understand what makes a belfrage listener tick. These are prople who spend all day listening to hate radio. The same hate radio that gave birth to their leader, trump. It is a weird bunch. Thank God it is a small bunch.

Why not an upside down ticket, Pence/Trump & Kaine/Clinton? The Vice President choices seem more qualified, less controversial, and with more stature. Are we voting for the Vice President? If Trump or Hilary die soon after being elected, they’ll get a pompous funeral. Once the ego equation gets solved, we can get on with national and world leadership.
