14 Thoughts on “Sioux Falls City Councilor Stehly opens session today

  1. who did they get to sing “god bless the usa”?

  2. Open the session? What is this place?….. Wall Street?….. Did she get to ring the bell, too?

Well, they are kind of similar, you know. Both places, WS and the legislature, allow investors to buy and trade or should I say, contribute and own….

Councilor Stehly did a nice job in Pierre.

I am reminded of when I attended this week’s Council meeting.

I sat near a person who is someone who regularly exercises their right to freedom of speech by giving public input at Council meetings.

This person purposely sat through the Pledge of Allegiance. This is my first encounter with this form of protest. I am someone who believes in every citizen’s right to protest, but I have to say I found this extremely disrespectful and very disturbing.

  4. Thats me you talking about and im sorry you feel that way.

  5. Its a pledge that discriminates

  6. One nation under God infringed upon First Amendment rights 7.1% of the population what is a atheist or agnostic Justice for All is simply true when we fighting for equality everyday if the USA is free why should we say the Pledge of Allegiance

  7. if theresa was there in support of greg jamison’s bill, was mmm there to speak against it?

  8. She did not testify, and it failed hard in committee, I think it only got two votes. But you know Pierre, protect business over citizens right to know.

Having Theresa open gives back some honor for this disappointing legislature. Her honesty, integrity, and public service are exemplary. She has a music background. Leading ‘God Bless America’ seemed appropriate.

Sierra, I’ve thought about taking a knee and throwing war medals at Huether for the pledge. City socialism and corruption doesn’t deserve a national salute. I’d support a petition to exclude the pledge at council meetings citing their regular constitutional violations. Disrespect for the nation assists their goal of ‘One Huether, Under God’.

  11. Im glad you agree with me .im gonna keep sitting down during the pledge and the prayer .whats disturbing and very disrespectful is we have a city government that doesnt beleive in transparency and is corrupted. Its slowly changing thanks to the citizens that voted for pat starr greg neitzart marshal solberg and theresa .They are making a change in government for the better.

  12. While I understand what you are doing, and respect it, I don’t have a problem with standing for the pledge and prayer, I usually just think about other things while it is going on to humor myself. I usually try to say the pledge in different accents to see if people around me hear. I think my southern version is the best.

I got in trouble my sophomore year of HS (1989?) for not standing for the pledge during study hall. My dad got called in for conference with the principal. He called me a ‘communist’ for weeks on end. I thought it was funny. I told my principal it was my 1st amendment right to NOT pledge. I have often argued that many brave women and men have died for a country, it’s people and freedom, and not for a piece of cloth. The pledge really means nothing, unless of course you are a communist 🙂

  13. When I was in the first grade, I thought the phrase “and to the Republic” was “and to the Republican,” and because of that, I refused to say that part…. True Story! Seriously! …..What a Dem from day one!….. Hahahahahaha

I am always leery of people who consistently sit in the front row of church and those who critique how others handle the Pledge of Allegiance….

Probably the best excuse for not standing for the pledge and prayer is to keep your seat warm because Huether fooled with the thermostat.
