Rachel has something I like in people (straight or gay); Snark. Rachel has no problem with bringing her lesbian sisters on her show and ripping on the decline of morality amongst straight couples all the while cracking gay sex jokes about Larry Craig. She gets it. If you can’t pick on yourself, you can’t pick on anybody else. So I ask? Is it sexism when you are sexist towards yourself?

Ask Rachel, I would love to hear her smartass answer.

  1. I like Rachel because she’s smart.

I think she’s one of the new mutants – and I mean that in a good, X-men, sort of way…

I recently asked my son (he’s in his late 20’s) about a theory I recently came up with – that people from his generation are more tolerant than previous generations because of comic books and movies:
X-men and the Hulk, Star Trek and Star Wars, et. al.

I mean …think somebody’s weird cause they love someone of the same sex? Hell – Spock’s dad is from a different planet!

Hate someone cause he’s black or because she has almond-shaped eyes? Are you kiddin? This guy’s green and weighs 600 pounds! That guy bursts into flames! Lasers come outta that guys eyes fer chrissakes!

Remember the bar scene from Star Wars? Talk about different…

Hell, Han Solo’s best buddy is a WOOKIE! Remember when Jabba the Hut had Princess Leia on a chain (and in that sexy metal bikini)? The suggestion that he (oh for disGUSting) kept her for sex was obvious… So… imagining her having sex with another woman is wayyyyy closer to normal by comparison — at least another woman is HUMAN.

Just look at comics and movies – Kirk gets caught in bed with a chick that’s BLUE fer chrissakes – think he’d have a problem with someone that’s brown or black? Bitch, please…

So just look at comics and movies and see if my theory doesn’t make sense:
that growing up with heroes that are that wildly different; mutants and aliens – might make one more tolerant to differences that are trivial by comparison.

So ummm… what were we talking about?

    Oh yeah, Rachel…

    I like her. She’s smart.

  2. I like how she walks the fine line between comedy news and real news. I also think it is wonderful how she can detach herself from gay rights when discussing the issue. she is incredibly talented. My dream would be for Colbert to go on vacation for a week and let her fill in. It would be hilarious.

  3. Most of those comics have been around since the 60’s at least.
Kids are more tolorant today because they get more information to form their opinions. You’ll probably notice that the more well-traveled someone is, the less likely they are to be a backwards, racist prick.

  4. I know several South Dakotans my age that haven’t even been to Canada or seen the Oceans. Pretty scary.

  5. I’ve flown over the atlantic and been to Canada. Does that make me special?

I’ve met several lifetime SD residents who have never seen the black hills.

And that pic of Maddow makes her look like the kid from “American Pie”.
