2010

Top Story of 2010 in SD? Mayor Huether’s nomination.

“Cap’tan, I can’t spend much more money, I hope this will be enough to destroy the Staggers’ campaign”

Sure, there were a few other things.

Smoking Ban (we saw this coming a mile away in the polls).

Herseth getting beat. Big whoop. I predicted early on that Noem’s ravishing good looks would win the Republican nomination, and she had a good chance of beating Steffy, and when the money poured in, I knew it was over for Steffy.

Food for votes. A political football created by the pack of wolves called the SD GOP who can’t stand to lose.

Huether beating Staggers was a surprise to me. Even though I predicted that Kermit and Mike would be in the runoff. I thought that Kermit would squeak it out. Mike’s hiring of one of the best campaign strategists, performing a smear campaign in the underground, employing get out the vote experts and spending 3x more then Kermit sealed the deal for Mike an amazing come out of nowhere victory.

I think the biggest surprise was that Sioux Falls voters trusted a mastermind marketing strategist of one of the most predatory credit card companies in the nation to run their city. We will see how this turns out. Maybe it will be the top story of 2011.

This could be good for Sioux Falls . . . businessmen

“Shut up and go make some croutons!”

This announcement has me on the fence;

Here’s a surprise: Pat Costello, the former Sioux Falls City Council chairman and candidate for mayor has been appointed to Gov.-elect Dennis Daugaard’s executive committee. Costello will serve as the commissioner for the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

While I liked Pat as a councilman, I felt he waffled a lot. Call it the cynic in me (or just read his mayoral race donor list) and one wonders if this appointment will only be good for Sioux Falls businessmen and not citizens city and statewide as a whole. Don’t believe me?

The governor-elect has a three-part plan to boost economic development in the state. First, he wants to continue efforts to recruit businesses from high-tax, high-regulation states to South Dakota. While other states increase taxes and regulations, Daugaard said South Dakota will continue to be business-friendly.

And Anti-worker.

The Last New Year’s Eve at the Pomp Room

Did you come for the burning,

or only to smell the highly amped guitars:

a crackle, some quavers,

sweat under the stage lights?

Torment yourself no longer.

Breathe deep and shake that ass free form,

to hell with the beat and booze.

And at 2 AM zoom your motor

for those that want to take you,

for those more lonesome than the hobo.

Note: This took place Dec 31, 1998.  I studied the place for years prior to this night: the music, the people, the rum and Cokes.  This was written in two sessions, distilling the Pomp Room’s last night.
