Hal Wick’s jaded view of art

“Art should be used to sell cars.”

Okay, it’s been awhile since I have gone off, just kidding, but after reading this article I literally want to bang my head against the wall;

Airport officials have teamed with the Sioux Falls Arts Council to create a long-range master plan for the purchase and display of art highlighting the city and region to visitors.

One idea is a rotating display that features the work of local artists.

Hey! That sounds like a great idea that is waaaayyyy past due. But it gets better . . .

“We’d like to have something with an aviation theme but also focus on the attributes of the area and the heritage of the area,” airport executive director Dan Letellier said.

Huh? I don’t even get his logic. Dan, when people fly into an airport and get off an AIRPLANE they understand the concept of what an airport is, so why would we bombard them with more pictures of airplanes? I have a better idea, art that is representative of our community. The last thing I want to think about when I get off an airplane is being on an airplane.

Board member Hal Wick suggested talking with Avera and Sanford health systems, which have emphasized incorporating art into their new interior building designs.

Yeah, just walk around the hospital, there are tons of paintings of people getting Cancer treatments and open heart surgery . . .

Wick’s goal is to use artwork to sell the area to visitors and also show potential businesses and employees the depth of the community.

Why is it when a Republican talks about art they can only do so if it has capital value? Wick’s view of art is that it has to have monetary value, or it is not art. Hal, what you are looking for is large format advertising at the airport, not art. Your suggestion only devalues the emotional affect art has on people. Trust me, I have worked 18 years in the graphic art industry, and have been an artist my entire life. There is a difference. Art should give visitors an emotional feeling as to why we have a great community. We shouldn’t be trying to sell them something with a painting of a buffalo. And why are we letting a guy who thinks everyone in SD should carry a gun decide on what art is acceptable? That is a travesty in itself.

My suggestion? Bring me on as a volunteer consultant.

The slow moving wheels of government

We have been talking about this for how long?

SIOUX FALLS – New regulations are coming for all in-home day cares in the city of Sioux Falls.

The city council voted unanimously tonight for all registered day care providers to post their license, and inspection scores in plain sight for all parents to see.

Sioux Falls has about 430 registered in home day cares right now. The new ordinance will also open up in home day cares to announced and unannounced visits from the health department, law enforcement and even parents.

This kerfuffle has been going on way to long. Since I have been watching council meetings (I think about 6 years) they have been talking about this. It’s about time we actually expect day cares to follow rules like we do with restaurants. Food poisoning is a serious issue, but not as serious as your child getting injured or abused at a day care. I often scratch my head when I think about the priorities of the SF Health Department. They blamed it on not having enough resources (money) to inspect daycares. But somehow we have a cool million for a ‘Vision’ of an Events center and a heated floor for rhinos at the zoo. I am amazed that more parents are not outraged by their excuses? But I will commend the mayor’s office and the city council for finally getting something passed that will put more teeth in the inspection process.

So you wanna be a SF city councilor

Applications are now being taken for an open position on the Sioux Falls City Council in the Northwest District.

Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter stating why they would like to serve as a council member, and also will need to complete a Notice of Interest and Statement of Financial Interest form at www.siouxfalls.org.

The deadline for applications is noon March 16.

The City Council will review applications, and the finalists will participate in a public forum hosted by the City Council and moderated by the League of Women Voters at 6:30 p.m. March 29.

The remaining seven City Council members will vote to fill the vacancy at their April 4 meeting.

The successful applicant will serve until the April 2012 election.

I hope we get at least 4-6 applicants.

What ever happened to ‘Roughing it’

This is what camping used to look like

You can park your ginormous RV in front of your house now, for at least 48 hours;

And the owners of recreational vehicles also will be allowed to park those vehicles in their driveways for up to 48 hours.

While I don’t understand the concept of an RV unless you are traveling with Willie Nelson’s concert tour, I will defend property owners on this one. As long as your vehicle is entirely on your property, that you own, and pay property taxes on, there should be no restrictions on it. It’s silly and goes against property rights. But my other argument is, that if you can afford one of these monstrosities, you should be able to afford to store it properly. It reminds of something I said about golfers bitching about green fees, if you can’t afford them you should take up a less expensive hobby, like lawn darts. It seems these days everyone wants to be king shit even if they can’t afford the shit.
