WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!

Yes on 14 talks about how great it is to take your taxdollars and give it to corporations who have shoved an axe handle up our hard working butts for years. Denny Doobad tells us that we have to give these handouts so we can attract businesses that pay good wages. Really? We have had corporate handouts for decades in SD, and what has been the result? The rich getting richer and the working stiffs getting poorer, while paying higher taxes on food and utilities. Wanna help us? Spend our tax dollars on public service and education, and budget accordingly. If the state wants a fund to help corporations I suggest a state income tax on corporations.

Snowgates; Will Stehly have to loan money to the city for the election?

Stehly got former city clerk Debra Owen and former mayor Dave Munson to sign the petition today (Dave was a bit camera shy).

There has been some talk that certain city council members are claiming that the snowgates initiative cannot be on the ballot with the school board election because they did not appropriate funds for it. Baloney. A South DaCola foot soldier sent me this fine piece of info;

I thought I would shoot these state statutes to you. BTW, the council called the Drake Springs Pool election. State law requires the city to formally ask the school district to join their election. This is usually done by November of the preceding year by the city clerk. The school district votes on the matter–in the past the school district and the city split duties and the bill but it appears that those days are over–given your blog. Relations with the County/City/School are always in flux but throwing Bev Chase under the bus for the City’s incompetence was shameful.

SDCL 9-20-2. Petition proposing ordinance or resolution–Contents. A petition to propose an ordinance or resolution shall be filed with the finance officer, containing in proper form the proposed ordinance or resolution. It shall be signed by the required number of the resident registered voters of the municipality. The signer or circulator shall add the signer’s residence address, county of voter registration, and date of signing. The signer’s post office box number may be given in lieu of a street address if the signer lives within a municipality of the second or third class. No signature on a petition is valid if signed more than six months prior to the filing of the petitions.

SDCL 9-20-4. Presentation of initiative petition to governing body–Submission to voters. When a petition to initiate is filed with the finance officer, the finance officer shall present the petition to the governing body at its first ensuing regular or special meeting. The governing body shall submit the petition to a vote of the voters in the manner prescribed for a referendum.

SDCL 9-20-11. Date of election on referendum petition–No action taken pending election. The governing body shall, upon the presentation of a petition pursuant to § 9-20-6, submit the question to the electors at the next annual municipal election or the next general election, whichever is earlier. Pending the election, the governing body may take no action with respect to the subject matter of the petition that would alter or preempt the effect of the proposed petition. However, the governing body may expedite the date of the election by ordering, within ten days of receiving the petition, a special election to be held on a Tuesday not less than thirty days from the date of the order of the governing body.

BTW, I was searching for the Drake Springs pool documents that were voted on by the council to call that election and discovered that there are MANY meetings that have disappeared, most of 2008 and 2009. And all swearing-in ceremonies prior to Huether taking office. So much for the most open and transparent mayor/council . . .

What is the solution? Stehly has told me today that if the city has a problem with funding the election due to appropriations she would loan the city $21,000, interest free in the form of a promissory note and they could pay her back next year. This is NOT a bluff. Stehly told me that she could pull the money out of a retirement fund.

What State Senator has ALEC invested in this year? (Guest Poster)

Oh the joys of SOS Gant’s elections website during the finance filing season. We still maintain this website is an example of how not to setup a public access ‘open’ data records system.  It takes a bit of effort to get to this list.  When your query is exported out, the data is almost unusable to the regular person trying to gain an understanding.  Here is a preliminary estimation of which SD State Senator is either owned or being ‘rented’ by ALEC this year.

We all remember the PAC setup up by our esteemed SOS Jason “BK” Gant to sway past elections for ALEC, Republican Senate Campaign Committee (RSCC). This year BK transferred the committee to Senators Russell Olson and Corey Brown to run.   Why is this important to us?  If elected, the listed 19 candidates plus the 2 Senator officers are going to force ALEC model legislation on our citizens.  There is no If, And, or But: the 21 senators will have to vote for any John Birch Society based measure sent to them by the Koch Brothers, Altira, Pfizer, Eli Lilly and any number of other anti-citizen financers.  This is the way the GOP runs to keep the money flowing to them.   Pay particular attention to who is not on the list and add your comments.  Note Dan Lederman is not on the list, his Rushmore PAC is also an extension of ALEC through the donations received and given to members of the following list.

According to SOS Gant’s website, just for this general election, $72,000 is being invested.  This does not include the additional $2,500.00 invested for the June primary.  Where do you think the poorly written and executed Ballot measures came from?  These anti-citizen ALEC model legislation sessions our state government paid members to attend to learn how to screw us.

Of this $72,000.00 investment, the national ALEC organization through their subsidiary Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) directly sent $15,000.00.  We now have Mike Rounds and Todd Schlekeway using their campaign funds to team up and assist this ALEC organization.  Very brazen, very bad we now have our former governor showing how shallow he is by teaming up with the rest at the feeding trough of corrupt money.

Cory Madville also covered this today, but missed a few things.

South Dakotans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty

Moeller execution set for 10:00 pm Tuesday

Fellow South Dakotans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty:

At 10:00 pm on Tuesday, 30 October, for the second time in as many weeks, South Dakota will kill a man. State officials are set to execute Donald Moeller for the 1990 murder of Becky O’Connell at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls in the name of the State of South Dakota. Not, however, in the name of all South Dakotans.

A coalition led by the South Dakota Peace & Justice Center (SDPJC), Pax Christi, and South Dakotans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (SDADP) will be holding a vigil for Moeller’s execution outside the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. The vigil is set to begin at 8:00 pm at the base of the penitentiary flagpole on North Drive, and you are invited to join us.

The prayerful, nonviolent gathering will be a time for song, a time for silent reflection, and a time for solidarity with all victims of violence and respect for life in all its forms. Participants are asked to bring lawnchairs and wind-proof candles, and to dress warmly.

If you are unable to make it to Sioux Falls on Tuesday night, please let us know if you would like to and are able to hold a solidarity vigil in your hometown.
