At the first meeting, a lot of calls about the impact on special programs like Honors and Spanish immersion, students wanting to transfer into the district, and then 26th Street issues. But nothing about race or economics, and thus, student diversity. That’s too bad, because dealing with race and economic diversity are two of the most important issues that need greater attention, and in so doing, afford a greater educational experience for all of the students regardless of whether they are in a special program, live near 26th, or want to transfer in to be a part of the Lincoln Band program.

At the beginning of this first input session, Dr. Maher laid out the ground rules and then proceeded to not follow them.

You get one call per person during the entire public input process and the facilitators will not answer the same question twice.

During this first session, he chose to answer the same question twice:

Enough about the middle school Spanish Immersion and Honors Programs at Edison!

    We get it.

You don’t want them split between two different middle schools.

Hopefully, the District will not spend anymore valuable public input time discussing this. There are only five one-hour sessions setup for public input and the concerns of 25,000 students need to be addressed.

The District needs to protect the taxpayers in this process and if that means your kid doesn’t get to take an advanced math class in 8th grade, then so be it! Their lives will not be ruined because they didn’t take geometry as 14 year-olds!!
