Starting pay for officers is $49K a year, THAT IS STARTING PAY. They can afford their own meals. I am not sure why the hospital(s) continue to give them free food. Read this comment and thread about it. While I know in the past when Councilor Staggers has asked about the FREE meals, Chief Barthel and Burns have both stated that it is discouraged and against policy to accept FREE meals. I think FREE coffee and fountain pop is acceptable, but not sure. If you read the comments you will see a continuing theme.

14 Thoughts on “Why do the Police continue to receive FREE food?

Why do you hate cops so much?

  2. To clarify, the above comment was made by someone anonymous on Reddit, NOT by me. I also didn’t say anywhere in the post that I hate cops. There are bad apples in all professions. Many of the commenters I disagree with. BUT, I’m not sure why the police think they deserve a FREE meal when they can afford it. Do the meter maids get to eat for free at the hospital? How about the guys who mow the parks? Or fill potholes? Likely not. It also bothers me that one of the doctors in the comments defending the practice pretty much admits that the taxpayers are subsidizing security at the hospital by using officers. If the hospital thinks it has a security issue at the facility they can do what HyVee did and hire their own.

I’m purtey shure the hostiles are assisting our officers in a dynamic WW program and they should be commended for saving the taxxers money on type II therapies.

Where was this FREE MEAL at? It implies some sort of hospital setting–can you clarify?

    Thank you

  5. As I understand it it is Avera, Sanford ended the practice.

If I had a restaurant business I’d subliminally afford coffee and a donut for police. Police presence represents a safe environment. The policy should be suspended if it’s noticed or abused. Humorously, hospital food should be free. However, free for police doesn’t look good. How about a substantial discount instead?

Something that is never mentioned with this topic is how firefighters in this town pay for their own meals. They chip-in together to make their meals happen. The city doesn’t pay for their meals. That’s why you sometimes see a big red rig briefly parked at HyVee. Now, that doesn’t mean that they still don’t get some free food, which is donated to fire stations here in town by individual citizens and corporate entities, but for the most part they pay and cook their own meals while on duty.

Hey Hooterville’s, let’s be fair here. Police officers actually work all day unlike firefighters who playing grab a$$, take group filed trips to the local grocer, and cook gourmet meals for each other on their taxpayer funded commercial kitchen appliances.

  9. If you read that Reddit.com thread, you find quite a few people who have had bad experiences with local police. We need to determine why that happens and take corrective action. One of the things that people complain about is police receiving free meals at local hospitals. One free meal can be an expression of thanks but a series of free means is a small bribe. It can encourage enhanced police presence for the meal giver at the cost of reduced police presence elsewhere. As a result, restaurants should not be allowed to give free meals to police.

  10. BNN, why are you hating on firefighters? I am not hating on the police. I was just clarifying something that most assume wrong. Did I strike a nerve? I must have. Oh, and is your 5/8″ garden hose ready to fight a fire in this weather if the firemen don’t come? It better be. How are your appliances? Are they up to snuff?

I don’t understand why anyone would care who feeds who for free. The most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. People are so unhappy all the time they find things to complain about and business that give discounts or feed cops for free is so dumb to even mention yet complain about. Find something real to get outraged about, there are plenty of topics

  12. You are correct, instead of complaining about a certain sect of city employees who are bribed in supplying a private non-profit security maybe instead we should be talking about all the kids in the SF school district that are fed for free or the people who get in lines at Feeding SD, or weekly at the Fairground or at the Banquet. Maybe we need to also shame them?

  13. I believe CH just fully endorsed food stamps. Ice cream and all.

HBQ – Its what a private business does to show support for our 1st responders and the key there is a “private business”.

Truth be told I have not issue with Food Stamps and some public assistance, stuff happens to people and I have no issue with it. I have an issue with lifetime of perpetuity of govt handouts.
If I could waive a magic wand honestly I would just like to do away with all subsidies period, this includes to the wealthy and businesses. The reason we fight all the time is we all have different values of what we feel is important. I say do away with ALL of it but, it will never happen.
