I was told recently that the building that holds Mercato and the former Lucky Lady Casino on the Loop has been purchased by a local investor. There are no plans that I know of at this point except that they will likely bulldoze it and start fresh.

It is in the early stages, but this will likely be a great re-zoning test model for mixed-used retail and mixed-use affordable and middle income housing. I would encourage the Strongtown folks in SuFu to approach him about building density.

I do know that the investor that bought it has a great track record in this community and will likely work with the neighborhood to create something that fits appropriately.

  1. Downtown is starting to resemble SoHo in NYC. Maybe that’s the unofficial plan. There’s a need for a market type convenience store. Condos are pricey but a real estate slump could cure. Ribbon and dog yard will be a good encampment for homeless.

  2. L3wis is right, the sweet spot will likely be a couple multi story mixed use with some underground resident parking & surface for the businesses.

Hopefully they have a big concrete exterior wall for the rejected mural.

  3. I believe that location is one of the four places that Look’s Meat Market has been located at over the years going back to the 1880s. Thus, they need to put a historic marker there about Look’s. It’s one of the few meat markets still left in our fine town, I might add. Initially, Look’s was located where our fine downtown library is now located and next to another once meat market called the Mocamba Club, which itself started out as a Sunshine Food Store, which I’m sure had a meat market as well. Oh, a book should be written about Sioux Falls meat markets. AND, let’s not forget about Gunners, Dakota Territory, Opie’s, and Borrow Buck’s while we are at it…. Today’s youth only have things like Tinder, however, so meat markets have become somewhat rare…. Tinder and rare, two ways to have it, I guess…. While well done is just in the eye of the beholder at best…. Plus, meat has been very important to our fine town over the years. That’s why we still have Smithfield… You know, “….the other white meat”…..

  4. @F&L and you can’t overlook the North end’s Omer’s Market and their famous slogan “You can’t beat Omer’s meat”.
