You would think they are trying to cover up the assassination of JFK?! During the informational today (on a Monday this week, so they can go kiss the ring of the legislature tomorrow) they went over getting rid of the Brockhouse collection and they had letters from the Delbridge family supporting the surplus. So why is this letter redacted? I’m sure there was nothing TOP SECRET about what was said;

I still think this is a missed opportunity. We could have privately raised the $850K to restore the collection then we could put the displays in public buildings all over town. I know the zoo didn’t want the collection anymore, and I am fine with that, but we don’t have to build a whole new museum we could put the collection in special built atmospheric cases and put them in public buildings. The lack of vision from this work group was astounding! We don’t have to build a whole new multi-million dollar building to house the collection, WE HAVE EXISTING PUBLIC BUILDINGS. I am not sure why the mayor and mostly museum director wanted to surplus this collection. Once again, we have allowed Pastor Poops precedent, and they keep piling up.
The redacted areas probably have to do with sensitive matters concerning the Lenin’s Tomb analogy. In fact, didn’t the Panda bear come from China? Yup, there you go. Also, I’ve heard there is some interest in keeping that big Walrus for a continual Lennon/Beatles exhibit here in town. Why the Lennon/Beatles exhibit, I am not sure. But perhaps, it is meant to appease those who need some ‘Help’ or are having a ‘Hard Days Night’ thinking about the loss of this collection to Notre Dame and the less careful maneuvering of a Hunchback, who never seems to die but is always stuffing himself. 🙂
Pretty disgusting. We could have saved the collection, but we have MASSIVE WUSSIES running our city government. Scared of their own shadow. If I were the mayor I would have found the donors to save this. If I was the council I would have found the donations. But no surprise, because when you are a WUSSY there is really no way to pull up from that. Our city council is so weak I am surprised they can put their own underwear on, do you just enjoy the mayor telling you what to do? Apparently so. Also, how can a private museum director tell us what to do? She is a private employee of a non-profit and has NO authority to tell us what to do with the collection. When you vote this collection away it will show how stupid, naive, and ignorant you are. You can still save it, but I am guessing your ‘Wussyness’ will take ahold. I have to admit, if the council chooses to save this, I will be surprised, but we know how this will go down, the mayor’s EMPLOYEES the CITY COUNCIL, will give it away, and all their hand wringing doesn’t mean two sh!ts.
As someone who grew up in Sioux Falls and watched that collection grow one new mount at a time, I hear you, Scott. I recall how the animals were displayed in Henry’s hardware store amongst all the shovels, brooms, feed sacks, etc. And there was such anticipation when they built the addition to West Sioux Hardware with the high ceiling to house his trophy giraffe. There is a lot of local history in that collection. Unfortunately, 40+ years have passed and most of those who cared are gone. How long had the zoo’s museum been closed before anyone noticed?
If there was a groundswell of interest, the money to keep the collection would have been raised by now. $850k is a lot of money, don’t get me wrong, but we have enough oligarchs in Sioux Falls who can come up with that money in 24 hours for the right cause and passion. We’ve seen it before with the Arc of Dreams, for example. It’s not happening this time. I’m sad to see the collection be disbanded, but at least it’s not going to the landfill as first feared. And hopefully we will retain a couple of the signature pieces to incorporate into the former Great Plains (soon to be Sioux Falls) Zoo 2.0.
Notice the email which contains these “words of support” is a Reply to an original email with the Subject line, “Brockhouse Collection – Letter of Support”? Likely an email from someone from the City (Progressive Paulie himself?) or someone involved in the working group who solicited something from the family member, which was then returned as a “Reply”.
Likely (another) totally contrived arrangement in this series of wrong-headed actions.
It was nauseating to hear Soehl extoll relief about receiving this information, as if the words were actually genuine and weren’t solicited, nor compelled in some way. Pontius Curt was able to rinse his hands at the bowl prior to the vote.
They got rid of the Brockhouse collection. They tore down that classic 1920s/30s era Standard Oil gas station at 18th and Minnesota. I’m afraid our local political leaders don’t care about history anymore. Perhaps, history is a precursor or a means to transparency, which would explain these actions, wouldn’t they?
( and Woodstock adds: “But what I don’t understand is that these things are gone or to be gone, but yet Studio One, I mean Romantix, still stands next to the City Center….. I guess we got priorities around here, huh?”….. 🙁 )
whens t dennt gonna get his ducks in row for that promenade in back of the vape store. they wendies on 41st corner is never gonna re-open wth is going on out there
In the terms of Poops da Preacher, tearing down our history is a sign of transparency? If our history is gone, we no longer have to look to it?
You know, they could put the West Soo mounts in an exhibit in the new convention center?
A real leader would build a consensus in the community around a dream for the future. This yahoo administration only wants to suck as much out of the community and give to the bankers and bondsters. The collapse of the convention meeting industry is going to be reversed and saved by Sioux Falls building a dinosaur? Not in the long run. We once again are being scammed by the dreams of our grandparents.
