The vote will demonstrate the public’s preference. My daughter started college as nearly a sophomore because of high school AP credits. It’s a good program. Happy Easter everyone.

If the vote is about the students the only vote is a YES vote.

If the vote is about the special interests, then screw up the SF school calendar and vote no.

do you really think the pools will stay open later? no. will other schools change because sioux falls does? no. when it snows again, and school is canceled four or five times, and school lets out on june 15, guess who will be crying that they don’t get to spend enough time at their lake cabins or they’ll have to cut their european vacations short? the same ones who wanted to change the start date. it seems the ones who want this change are the house wives and the rich who don’t have to work. for the kids who’s parents aren’t paying their way through college, the ap courses are needed to save money on tuition to the in state schools that will educate them so they can get a higher paying job out of state.

To tell you the truth, I don’t care when school starts. I’m probably on the side school board candidate, Randy Dobberpuhl. A compromise could have been reached before signatures had to be collected for the petition drive. An election is happening because school administrators and the school board refused to work with parents. And now that they may lose the big kahuna, they pulling out the big excuse book.

IMHO, it seems the current board has jeopardized the precious timeline for AP students by ignoring this group of parents who where only asking for a week. Now there could be a three week jump. I agree l3wis, this all could have been avoided if this current board would reach out more and listen. Remember the Mark Twain name change-decided behind closed doors, The Pledge of Allegiance-our vets where only asking for 10 seconds.

Yeah, and ya gotta hand it to the Argus. For eleven years they pretty much let Homan run the school district like a dictatorship, and NOW that a new guy is coming in, the ED board finally says something about that lack of transparency. Go figure.

Regarding AP credits. SD colleges will often not accept all. MN colleges do. Regarding tuition. MN is full reciprocity with SD. Students attend UofM for cheaper than instate MN residents. I’m aware of one student who’s from MN attending USF to establish SD residency so she can transfer to UofM.

Bottom line, we’re attracting MN residents and business but they’re attracting the younger and brighter. Given there’s no tax on food or clothing in MN, are taxes that much higher there? Given low SD wages, aren’t we the call center sweat shops MN doesn’t want.

I suspect some of this AP class situation is not accurate. All the east coast states begin school after Labor Day. Their students don’t appear to have any problems as is being suggested. I suspect the AP excuse may be a cover for the real reason….athletics.

That’s right about the AP classes. Our daughter got very little college credit from taking these classes. Private school in SF, not to be named here, is rumored to not “like” these classes. Of course, anything that a school cannot charge full tuition for would be disliked. Anyway, if a kid is really learning, not just memorizing for some test, it doesn’t matter when start/stop times are. True learning/knowledge will be retained.

From Unconvinced & Teatime comments isn’t it apparent that SD higher education is profit oriented while neighboring states are more student oriented?
