Ex-mayor to head tech school foundation

Dave Munson is going back to school.

The 68-year-old former mayor was hired Monday to serve as interim director of the Southeast Technical Institute Foundation through the end of the year.

With about $750,000 in net assets, the foundation primarily pays for student scholarships and short-term loans. It will be Munson’s job to raise money from corporate and individual donors.

“I’m a strong advocate of Southeast Tech Institute,” Munson said. “What I want to do is build corporate awareness of what the value of STI is to Sioux Falls.”

Munson said Sioux Falls School District Superintendent Pam Homan first approached him about the job about the time he left office. He toured STI’s facilities and liked what he saw.

He starts Sept. 1 and will make $33,400 for four months of work. Munson and STI President Jeff Holcomb agree that it’s a temporary arrangement.

The position has been open since May, but Holcomb has found it difficult to find experienced fundraisers during a recession. Munson will help maintain continuity in STI’s fundraising efforts while Holcomb continues to search for a permanent director.

“I didn’t want to rush that process,” Holcomb said. “I want to get as good a pool (of applicants) as possible.”

In the meantime, he expects that Munson will be a good fit. Holcomb said Munson knows the community and the businesses and individuals to contact to “keep those connections moving.”

“He truly is an engaged member of the Sioux Falls community,” Holcomb said of the former mayor. “This was truly an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up.”

For Munson, it’s a chance for the former teacher to get back into the education field and get out of the house. He said he has spent the past few months cleaning out things that he has accumulated during 32 years of elected office.

“I really spent a lot of time boxing things, throwing things away that aren’t relevant anymore,” he said.

15 Thoughts on “Munson’s Golden Parachute? SE Tech?

Not a rumor l3wis. Aside from the golden parachute the city provided dave to bail out with, sucking off the school system teat is now near and dear to his heart. The school system has hundreds of substitute reachers who make about $90 a day with ZERO bennies, and Pam Homan, our $181,000 a year superintendant hires Dave? To do what? To head the STI Foundation. That foundation is supposed to pay for student scholarships and short-term loans. But now that foundation is also paying Dave $2100 a week.

    Our property taxes at work.

  2. I’ve heard roughly the same thing. Wow. Just wow.

  3. The teachers union needs those sold out lower tiered substitute slaves to cover for the minimum 10% absenteeism rate that the upper tiered full time members abuse in the Sioux Falls district. Lets be nice
to Pam, didn’t she finally move to the city and live up to
    the original agreement?

  4. if the media wasn’t so in love with munson, perhaps they would do a story on how munson is still making over $100,000 a year on the taxpayers dime. plus i would bet he is pulling in his city pension as well. also, was this a position that some one retired from, or was it created for dave?

  5. Saw Dave at lunch yesterday at Bracco with the Fire Chief Donn Hill & some mystery woman I can only assume was the bag lady. Anywhoo, I overheard them plotting to set all his political enemy’s homes on fire and delay the response as to ensure total destruction and maximize loss of life. When I told Dave that was very Janklow-esque he told me I was being an unruly drunk, gave me an atomic wedgie and bashed my face into the front door as he threw me into the street just as the Bus carrying MyMainVein Mike stopped. When I pleaded for a hanky to stop the gushing of all my blood into the already overburdened sewer system, the Mayor kicked me in the balls repeatedly as he screamed at me to stop pissing all over our collective non-plan, Events Center vision. I told him that just like on a jellyfish sting, piss is a good thing to make the pain stop. So then he whips out his laptop and shows me the virtual flythrough of his big concrete box but by then I had passed out from exhaustion while trying to find a single hair of his that was out of place.

So, yes I can confirm Dave is indeed the anti-Christ.

It is progress to see SE Tech finally giving those juicy positions to people who are not blood relatives of the higher ups. Baby steps!

  7. It will be interesting to see what happens when the SE Tech breaks free from the SF school district and becomes part of the big boy school system.

So he still is working a public job and we are supposed to be upset? I don’t see what the big deal is. He’s gettin paid and you wait tables, so fucking what.
    Waaaaaawaaaaa booooohooooo…..

  9. I remember it being reported when he received this gig – it’s a one year deal that I believe was created just for King David.

  10. I can attest from personal experience – it takes some time to transition from an accustomed level of life-style to another. Transitional temporary employment is a good option – one I wish I’d had available to me during one or another of those from-up-to-down periods.

  11. Hellbilly? I really don’t care. I just don’t think the guy is qualified to mop floors at STI let alone run a foundation.

He really should teach a class to “give something back”.

  13. I find this all comical becuz when I used to work at the DT Holiday Inn as a breakfast server, Homan and Munson would come in very early and hide in a far corner and talk. I really didn’t understand what it was all about, but it all makes sense now.

  14. Anywhoo, I overheard them plotting to set all his political enemy’s homes on fire and delay the response as to ensure total destruction and maximize loss of life.

LMAO. But…..this position? The Foundation Dave is vamping $2100 a week from? Has only $750,000 in net assets. In just 4 months of three martini “business” lunches at the Holiday Inn, doubledippin dave will earn more from this scam than 75% of the joe sixpacks make in a year in this town. And how many scholarships are being denied needy students so dave has something to do in his “golden ” years?

  15. So where will Gene Rowenhorst land?

I have to wonder about the timing… did Huether push him out or was this planned?
