6 Thoughts on “Rail Relocation won’t occur until 2013 (In a perfect world)

I have to ask why it is even needed. Has there ever been a study of, you know, RAIL TRAFFIC in SF to justify such a non-recoverable capital expense?

After all, if all the rail traffic that passes through SF originates from outside the city, maybe it would be easier and cheaper to simply reroute that traffic and remove the tracks.

I think it is crucial to the development of DT and way past due.

I’m not saying it isn’t crucial to redeveloping DT. I’m merely saying that there likely isn’t enough rail traffic going through SF to warrant spending over $40 million that can’t be profitably recovered.

Do you live or work DT? I live within 4 blocks of two major lines. It seems sometimes the traffic is constant. I sleep in the basement because of the noise and whistles.

No, I don’t live DT. I’m just asking if it’s even necessary to build a rail yard if the traffic is pass-through. And if the traffic is pass-through, it seems to me that it would be better to study how to reroute that traffic away from DT (and most of the rest of SF).

The switchyards are DT currently, so no, there isn’t a way of re-routing the traffic. I took a walk thru the yards a few years back, what a f’ing hazardous mess. I almost turned around at one point because there was so much crap (sharp objects, steel, junk) laying along the tracks.
