This story is interesting. Could mean a lot of things. WM could build a SuperCenter still in South Sioux Falls, they could also build a neighborhood store, or nothing at all. Maybe WM is realizing that 3 stores are just enough in Sioux Falls. If I was the city of Harrisburg, I would be jumping all over WM to build a neighborhood store there;

Wal-Mart’s shift away from its supercenters toward small stores and online also underscores how it must respond aggressively to a new era of shopping: Consumers are increasingly moving to mobile devices, while at the same time they’re seeking the convenience of small stores.

It may be why WM is backing off on getting a building permit. The irony of all this is that SON may have prevented WM from making a big financial mistake by building a 4th store. Will they get a thank you? Ha.

4 Thoughts on “SON may just win afterall, by default

    It never made sense to have so many stores so close together. I suspect mayor 3-M offered big bucks incentives they couldn’t pass up. Friction from SON and (subliminally) from the populace had them review their marketing. Also, 3-M’s ego got set back. It’s happened a lot lately.

    As for me, I’ll continue stocking up on commodities at WM in Worthington (no tax on food or clothing). I’ve always looked at hard goods (ie electronics) at WM or another store then ordered it online (cheaper, no tax, free shipping). It feels good that my tax dollar isn’t paying for indoor sports temples and making Mikey rich.

  2. Your smoking your lunch if you don’t think Wallly’s not building there. Their stock is down so they have to say something to ease the bleeding during this market downturn. Until the 4sale signs go up on the property, you might as well consider it a done deal.

    I hope so, I can’t understand any company that keeps building dinosaurs such as a super walmart. THey are a pain in the butt to get in and grab during the week for a few things after work, they are too big for too many people who don’t want to walk 3 or 4 city blocks, they suck. You can go to Lewis Drugs or costco and get in and out in 5 to 10 minutes. Go to Fareway for killer meat, you can’t get it at Walmart. But wait til Amazon has groceries delivered same day, what the hell will Walmart do with hugh stores, and not EBT customers. Oh shit, maybe a Culvers will rent 2000 sq ft, a cost cutters rent 400 sq ft, the rest a cooler for groceries, build the damn cooler first and not by roof tops of nice neighbors that will be pissed off forever. Are there marketing people morans???

    I saw that article, also. What will America do when they start closing those big stores? Make events centers out of them? Shoot, we should have waited until they abandoned the Louise Avenue store to make our EC. (I’m betting they will close that store.)

    They aren’t making their income and sales projections either.
