UPDATE: KELO and KSFY both did stories today on the Annexation meetings. Surprise, Surprise, residents didn’t know about the meetings, and guess what else, they are not to happy the meetings are on a Tuesday, in the middle of the afternoon (2 PM) at a library that charges parking meters.

Stehly passed out flyers at her own expense. According to her, city officials said it would be too expensive to mail out notifications.

The city’s annexation task force will meet Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the downtown library. However, many affected homeowners are not happy with the scheduled time. They say it’s not convenient for people who work during the day.

The meetings could easily been held after 5 PM, and least of all, they could have been held at another venue (library) that doesn’t have metered parking (Caille). It was intentional to NOT notify residents and to make the meetings at difficult times.

I put together a flyer for councilor Stehly to alert citizens about possible annexation. Stehly paid for these out of her own pocket. Pocket change really. The city told her they could not afford to mail a notification to the homeowners. (I posted an image of the flyer below) She got the city’s legal team to approve the language.

Below is a video of Inside Town Hall talking about the annexation;

13 Thoughts on “UPDATE: The city could not afford to print 1,300 fliers about annexation

Really…..public meetings regarding a topic important to many SF residents being held on four Tuesdays from 2:00 – 3:30 pm.

City Councilors Kiley, Neitzert, and Selberg obviously are not interested in having the “working” public attend these meetings. How convenient that their own City Council Informational meetings start at 4:00 pm on Tuesdays.

  2. I see it both ways.

Replace Theresa’s name on this flyer with the mayors and you would call it Huether propaganda and that he’s bypassing the council.

But these folks do need to be informed.

Theresa, why do you believe you need to bypass the protocols of your office? Did you bring this up during a council meeting? Did you ask questions about these people needing to be informed?

I get your reasoning for the flyer, but this flyer is bloated with grandstanding, and you need to deliver it. Also SouthDacola.com is a good back channel for communications but will turn many people off quickly. Create your own webpage.

It’s tough. You’ve got the right intentions but you cant be a bulldozer. You need some help in the PR game.

Yes I requested that the City notify the public about these meetings and was told it would be too expensive…I invited the council to come with me to deliver these at our 4:00 informational meeting last week. I was advised to make it very clear that the flyer was from me and not the council. And Scott has committed to informing the public about updates. In this day and age people get their information in many different ways. I’m committed to helping the residents know what is going on.
And Scott has already put up more information than any other media outlet, I’m grateful for that.

I have had interactions with 6 of the proposed island annexation areas..they were ALL very appreciative of the flyer and the efforts to inform them about the annexation task force. Many were not aware there even was a task force, and once they read the flyer, they expressed disappointment that the meetings are being held at 2:00 in the afternoon. There are a lot of young families who work during the day. But I am hopeful there will be representation for each neighborhood.
It was uplifting and meaningful to hear from these homeowners. I am looking for positive results in the weeks to come.

There’s a legal problem when the city doesn’t properly notify the public. This is not the usual ‘hide zoning change signs behind tall weeds’. There’s an evidentiary opportunity here for a class of targeted annexation parties. As a citizen, I’m disturbed the city acts without notifying present residents. Maybe we don’t want you to provide expensive services for excepted areas. This sneak is an election topic. Whatever it takes to keep Huether and a few councilors out of public office.

if the city annexes property, and the homeowner sells, who is responsible for the assesment? The one who owned when the annexation was done, or the next person to buy the property?

  8. Too Expensive to send a mailer and notify these few folks is a disgusting example of how Huethers crooks behave. Afternoon meetings which are suppose to be for residents should be outlawed. How can these folks get the meeting times changed? i’m sure the scumbags at city hall will say these folks are not residents and should not get the same treatment.

How much does a purchaser pay per foot of frontage for a new home in Sioux Falls? I know that the developer is suppose to pick up part of the tab, how much is passed along to the purchaser? These folks should not have to pay anymore than the average purchase of a new parcel today. As the developer is long gone, the city will have to pick up the other side. Landowners should have 20 years to pay it off 0% interest to the city.

Anything less or more than what is paid by anyone else is unfair to one party and not acceptable.

And those who think your not going to play ball will be forced annexed in.

It is exactly what I suggested to Stehly. $20,000 paid for over 20 years with no interest.

  10. DL, you cant just set the cost at 20K. Its must be based on price per foot as not all lots are the same.

Scott, the cost would be included in the taxes for whoever owns and any potential buyer would need to discover this on their own with a basic search. Good realtors will help buyers out with discovery and I believe title companies will disclose at closing.

Why does it seem, almost every government meeting that that is open to public input is during when most people work?

They should just have the meetings between 4-5 at the Taphouse or Monks, that way we can catch the city directors with important questions.

KDLT was out trying to get somebody to talk to them today. I think we will be one of the last developed for a while. Better low hanging fruit that us.

    From the 40 year plan
    Split Rock Township Growth Area
    • Many existing rural residences are located
    in this township. Discourage expansion
    and further development of rural
    residential subdivisions where services are
    insufficient to meet anticipated demands

26th and Hwy 100 looking SE is all city, but as you drive along 26th Street to the east. All the older homes are not in the city limits. The city limits starts at their backyard property line.
