As a person who has ridden the streets of Sioux Falls for over 15 years, I can’t tell you about all the close calls I have had, even with sober drivers. Some weren’t paying attention, some were distracted, and even some will look straight at you and still proceed. Getting on a bike in SF is a ‘defensive’ practice. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There is something you must remember when driving your vehicles and you encounter a bicyclist; YOU ARE BIGGER and YOU ARE FASTER. Please pay attention to your surroundings and watch for bicyclists. These kind of events make us very sad;

Today we are sad. We are sad because someone many here knew as friend has died in a collision with a motor vehicle doing something that many of us know to be a beautiful thing – simply riding a bicycle.

20 Thoughts on “This could have been any of us

It’s termed a ‘Ghost Bike’. It was donated and is a good symbol for immortalizing this event.

Watch the city show up and cite or remove it. Maybe not, I think Tornow got the ‘wood stake’ and no longer sucks at code enforcement.

PG, way to turn this horrible event into a “Look at me, I’m still talking about city shit” thread. Selfish idiot.

Seriously, you should work for the city. You’re good at propaganda and they’re always hiring fascists.

  4. Angry Guy on August 20, 2010 at 8:20 am said:

You should STFU on topics as tragic as this one, especially where an innocent person was killed, that has nothing to do with your endless fucking parade of idiocy.
I’m a fascist. You’re a self centered dumbass. No offense, just calling it like I see it.

Seriously PG – this isn’t a topic about your ongoing conspiracy theories. You seem to somehow bring every other topic back to yourself or your hatred for the city, mayor, code enforcement etc so perhaps this is one of the rare occasions you could just refrain from commenting at all.

However this really isn’t an issue about bike safety – it is an issue with drunk (and high) driving. That guy would have mowed over whoever or whatever was there at the time whether it be a bike, motorcycle, pedestrian walking a small child, or even someone in a car.

This just boils down to wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunate, but very much avoidable if that moron behind the wheel stayed away from the pills and bottle. Too bad for the victim’s family… because 15 seconds in either direction it never would have happened.

You’re right Costner. Truly sad here.

    Consider:
What if the offender gets off due to present unconstitutional city government? He’s mentally ill and it’s a traffic matter the city considers civil but not criminal.

AG, call me what you will but you’re language has certainly proven who’s narrow minded.

Seriously, PG. Just STFU while you’re behind. I’m narrow minded and you’re still try to validate your argument? Dumb.

THANK YOU ANGRY GUY. Bout time. Jeeez PG move on or move away, nobody gives 2 shits anymore bout you. This was a horrible accident and the driver was charged with a Felony, not a code violation you dousche. because he was drunk and on meds (like you) have a little respect a man was killed.

  9. Angry Guy on August 20, 2010 at 8:16 pm said:

Hey hey hey.. JohnyD… let’s not get personal… Judge not, lest ye be judged…

and you spelled DOUCHE wrong. Dumbass.

  10. PG – Seriously? I am disappointed you went this route on this thread. I you want to comment about home rule on code enforcement threads or other city business, fine, but bicycling is near and dear to my heart, let’s stay on topic or I am just going to ban you from this site. I have only banned two commenters in the past, so it is not something I choose to do lightly.

    Thank you, DL.

  12. And you all need to just ignore stupid comments. It’s kinda like throwing gasoline on a fire. Stay on topic and we don’t have to worry about this stuff. I consider PG a friend, who has gone thru a lot in his life, but as a friend, I want to tell all of you, ignore stupidity, and to PG settle down.

    I resign. Last post.

  16. It’s ridiculous that Sioux Falls was recently recognized as a biking meca. This episode, along with the experiences of l3wis and others shows just how far Sioux Falls and US towns have to go until they catch-up to the bike commuting culture in the advanced civilizations in Europe.

  17. I think we got a high rating because of our trail system.

  18. Hamerhead on August 22, 2010 at 9:22 pm said:

I agree that SF got the high rating because of the bike trail. Riding on the streets in SF is dicey at best. There are times when I go through an intersection, I just go like crazy and hope that some nimrod doesn’t run a light. The drivers in SF own the road and they do not like to share.

  19. Been there dude. Or you’ll look back and wonder how you made it through as you feel the breeze of a speeding vehicle on your backside.
