While I would partially agree showing children about to get run over by a state legislator a bit harsh (even though I find it more strange then harsh) you must also realize that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Remember, another prominent Republican in our state sped and ran stop signs (actually probably less then Noem) and one day because of his negligence (running a stop sign and speeding) he killed a man.

The only thing that is harsh about this commercial is the reality of it and how SD Republicans have trouble with reality. As far as I am concerned, Bill is still in denial. And it seems the Republicans in our state are to, and they seem to have the liberal media in our state under their spell to.

As the Rapid City Journal points out;

The issue of traffic violations played a key role in Herseth Sandlin’s first election to Congress. She won a special election in 2004 after Republican Rep. Bill Janklow resigned following a crash in which he ran a stop sign and killed a motorcycle rider.

13 Thoughts on “Is this ad against Noem ‘Harsh’?

  1. you also have to question the judgement of someone who would willingly name their kid “booker”.

Perhaps she’s named him after the famous Booker T. Washington.

Actually, scratch that. I doubt she knows who that is.

  3. Why would a Republican name their kid ‘Kennedy’

  4. i heard “kennedy” was named after the chick on mtv, and “booker” was after her husband’s favorite wrestler, booker t of harlem heat.

  5. Are the middle initials MG?

Personally I like unique names, and even if I didn’t I could care less what a politician names their kid.

However, I think someone needs to fact-check her ad that says she is only giving $2 a week to her son. I’m going to go ahead and raise the BS flag on that one! 🙂

As to this ad – I don’t know if I would call it harsh, but it seems a little silly. Without knowing the full story of her stop sign violations it isn’t fair to assume she just burned through them as if she didnt care. Most of the people I know who have ever recieved such violations didn’t burn through the signs but rather did a “California stop” and rolled through them. Still illegal yes, but not really a safety issue as this ad suggests.

Using the images of children walking through a cross-walk seems a little contrived to me. It is almost as if they are preying upon the fears of parents, and I’m not a big fan upon the idea of using fear as a political tool.

  7. No one knows if the previous gov. got fewer speeding tickets. There is no question in my mind that he got a pass many times, so no tickets. I think the ad is great.
On Thinkprogress.org there is a story today about “GOP Candidate Vicky Hartzler Wants ‘Government To Leave Us Alone’ Yet Has Taken $774,325 In Federal Subsidies. ”
Change the name to Noem and the story would be the same except Noem’s federal farm money was far more then $774,325. More like 4 times that amount.

I know I mentioned this over at the SDWC however since it is here.

Compared to some of the other garbage that is out there. this is a good ad. very well put together and factually correct.

    but….

I have to agree with Costner on this, they are using fear as a tool by using kids. This is a really bad idea that could end biting the DNC in the rear.

Normally I would say go back and try again, not this time, file 13 it, move on.

I am not surprised by the fact that Booker only gets $ 2
a week for allowance. If Republicans had their way, the
current minimum wage would be $ 2 an hour.

  10. CL – LMAO!

Costner – Ask Randy Scott’s family about Janklow’s ‘California Stop’. I have a feeling Noem blow rural stop signs at full speed like Janks did.

I am not sure where all this “it is only a speeding ticket or a rolling stop sign” is ok? There is a difference between NOem and myself. Even if a lot of these were before she was a state rep, some have happened after. The difference is she writes the laws, I do not. If she and other legislators feels the speed limit should be raised, raise them, If you do not want a stop sign there….get rid of it. You write the laws, you can!! But if you get caught, pay the fricking ticket. Do not give me the I forgot BS. When I get a ticket, trust me, I do not forget about it. Can’t afford to pay for it? #18 Racota Valley Ranch ∗ Hazel, SD 57242 $3,058,152 Bullshit!! Your family just caught in a hunting license fraud, you do not think that was a for profit venture?

Janklow didn’t just roll through a sign… he totally ignored it. That isn’t even in the same zip code.

If Noem is burning signs then by all means call her on it, but if she slowed down and was doing less than 1mph but never came to a complete stop it is a different issue and wouldn’t be a danger to the kids portrayed in the ad.

I know people like to draw this comparison between Janks and Noem, but without knowing more details about her violations I can’t really say if that conmparison if fair or not. As I’ve said all along, I don’t really have a problem with the violations themselves (whether speeding tickets or stop sign violations) but what I have a problem with is her failure to appear in court and her arrest warrants. That just tells me she doesn’t feel the rules apply to her so she ignores them.

Costner, you don’t know if Noem, burned signs or rolled though them. None of us do. It’s pointless to talk about.
