This comes as no surprise that a local mover and shaker got appointed. I will say it was nice to see a younger person appointed to the board, but don’t expect any dramatic change from an insurance salesman . . . I’m just saying.

Nothing surprises me about the Washington Pavilion and it’s operation. I was on the original Ad hoc committee to include the Science Center as part of the Pavilion, especially the CineDome theater. I was asked to work on the proposal because I was at one time a technical employee at a similar facility in San Diego California.

But once the whole project was approved, my position was replaced by Sioux Falls “Movers and Shakers” who had no direct or related experience.

    2. he sells insurance. i guess there is an “art” to that.

    3. Scooter, you just perfectly described my problem with the building.

Didn’t he run for office once?

    5. I think it would be a great experiment to let regular joes sit on the board for a year that love art and music. I think you would find a lot of agreement and a lot of improvement.

    6. I would rather have actual artists or those that have studied art, art history, culture, aesthetics, curating, or theory on the board for once. I am not too excited about the idea of regular joes on the board. I get the feeling I would end up seeing a deluge of paintings that depict a country setting with black labradors and pheasants.

    7. Note I said ‘That love art and music’

I consider myself one of those ‘regular Joes’ who happens to know quite a bit about art and music, and would put myself in the ‘art snob’ category, but I am not indifferent to what other people like. Notice the current regime brought in the Rockwell exhibit in which they were suckered to pay dearly for. One thing about regular Joes is that we know how to stretch a dollar.

    8. Very true.

Every time I visit the Kirby Science Center (I hate the name BTW) I am truly ashamed. Exhibits that don’t work, or work improperly. Sometimes the same exhibit is in that state of disrepair for years.

The annual traveling exhibits are a joke. The traveling exhibits is where sponsor money is suppose to be used. To sponsor a variety of great and available traveling exhibits. There is a huge catalog of these exhibits, but instead they use the Center’s annual budget for a cheep one. Does anyone remember a “good” traveling exhibit?

The current grade level focused at the Science Center is K through 5th grade. Yes there are a few things designed for older kids, but the original intended range was through High School. I remember very vocal “educators” stating that “We have to catch these minds when they are young. Forget High School, it’s too late”. Hint, not one of the “educators” that were advisers actual taught a class…

I think Nate is probably experienced enough to sit on this board.
