It seems the council has a plan and looks like they are garnering (Item #38) the 6 votes they need to pass a mask mandate. Of course, with no penalty, but at least it will give businesses a little teeth to refuse customers;

MOTION TO RECONSIDER AN EMERGENCY ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SIOUX FALLS, SD, TO REQUIRE FACE COVERING IN AN INDOOR PUBLIC PLACE WHERE 6-FOOT SOCIAL DISTANCING CANNOT BE ACHIEVED. (The ordinance was considered at the meeting of November 10, 2020.)

Sponsors: Council Members Soehl and Kiley

I have a feeling after it failed last week the ones voting against the mandate got a very nasty earful from constituents that support it. I know that many polls across the country and even in SD support a mask mandate by a majority.

Of course, they are sidestepping Brekke and Starr’s mandate, but at least the goal is still going to be achieved. It’s just too bad we had to wait for our hospitals to be overflowing and people dropping like flies before we did something.

And how about this nurse’s story;

South Dakota nurse says many dying patients still insist COVID-19 ‘not real’

A South Dakota emergency room nurse on Monday expressed frustration that many of her patients don’t believe they are dying of COVID-19.

Jodi Doering’s tweet went viral on social media over the weekend after she tweeted about patients who “don’t believe the virus is real … while gasping for breath on 100% Vapotherm.”

“It wasn’t one particular patient, it’s just a culmination of so many people,” Doering told CNN’s “New Day.” “And their last, dying words are, ‘This can’t be happening. It’s not real.’ “

  2. Oh boy, masks, that’ll do it. Yessiree Bob! Now we will have numbers like Minnesota-who has had a mandate for months….wait, what’s that you say? Minnesota is seeing a huge spike right now, too? That can’t be right, they are using masks. Fake news I tell ya. Carry on sheep.

Might want to read the Angus Liar tonight. Evidently, Noem isn’t happy about an article. So, the Argus actually used FACTS this time and lo and behold, the hospitals are not overrun, in fact there appears to be quite a few beds still available. And what ever happened to the 5000 beds we were going to need the National Guard to put up. When is that happening?

Masks, what we need is a mandate and a lockdown. The Minnesota governor actually showed how Sturgis has lit up Minnesota.

Overflowing, it isn’t beds, it’s staffing, that’s the problem. Did you see the doctor on the news tonight?

Also, I was doing some late raking tonight with the help of a street light and I kept hearing choppers. It’s like we are in a war zone. What Noem is doing, or not doing, is criminal in my estimation. She needs to start working for us and not Lewandowski. Perhaps, it’s time to file charges against Noem at The Hague. She is committing elderly genocide with her current COVID policies, or lack there of.

The mayor and council don’t like attention. They realize the city has no jurisdiction per the unconstitutional judicial ordinance. People are the power. If you won’t wear a mask in public, you’ll be unaccepted and shamed. Once citizens realize the city is ineffective and unresponsible, we’ll defund them. Let’s do some unincorporated.

So how is a “new mandate” with no penalties for non-compliance different than the voluntary mask-wearing that’s barely been going on lately?

Sturgis! I read recently that the average Sturgis attendee is in their early 50s (53, I believe.) and from Minnesota, Iowa, or Nebraska.

As far as the BLM matter and COVID, it was a younger crowd than Sturgis. Young people are stilling spreading it to the elderly, but when you have older spreading to older it happens at a warped multiplier pace speed.

Neitzert will vote “No” like Erickson, because the triumvirate of ThuneHaken, Neitzert, and Erickson all have Republican ambitions.

  11. Take a breath and count to ten. Many of my fellow humans need to consider embracing math even HALF as hard as they cling to science.

There are relatively few absolutes in science and the science is far from absolute on COVID-19. Math, on the other hand, is absolute.

There is absolutely no math that indicates masks or shutdowns or restrictions have made any difference in the most important and ultimate statistic; deaths. Not testing rates or confirmed cases or any of the other multitude of statistics. Deaths. Death is absolute. And the fact is, as the math clearly shows, 99.92% of the population of the US either has not contracted the virus, contracted it and didn’t know it or contracted it and gotten over it. Bottom line, 99.92% of the US population has not died from COVID-19. And as awful as we hear South Dakota is, 99.3% of South Dakotans are in that category.

The math also clearly shows that 92% of the COVID-19 related deaths have come from people over 55 years of age. And in that 55+ age group, 63% are over 75 and 33% are 85+.

What does that all mean? The math strongly shows that if you are 55 or over you need to be very careful. If you are 75 or older even more so. And if you have a co-morbidity (especially heart disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, kidney-related conditions) or anything else that adversely affects your immune system, you need to be extremely cautious.

No mask mandate or any other measures that cities, counties, states or the federal government implement will make one damn bit of difference in the number of our fellow humans who die from this virus. Take special precautions if you are (or think you are) particularly vulnerable. Everyone else, remember what we each should have learned in kindergarten: Wash your hands and keep your hands to yourself. All of these other measures serve one purpose only: To make us feel better. Psychologically. That we are “doing something”. Regardless of the fact that it doesn’t accomplish anything. It fits right squarely into the category of pissing in the ocean.

  12. "Very Stable Genius" on November 17, 2020 at 4:56 pm said:

Now, the mayor is for the mask mandate, but that’s because on record he won’t have to vote for it. I am sure there will be a “safe” majority on the council for it now, if you know what I mean.

Do Bless Neitzert with your divinely provided wisdom, oh Lord.

  14. Oliver, first off, masks have been proved to help somewhat, as well as many other things, like staying home, washing your hands and staying healthy. They figured that out in the 1600’s during the plague. That science has changed little, you don’t want sick people sneezing on you. But this is about hospital capacity, and that isn’t just about people with Covid, it is also about those who don’t have it. What if you get in a bad car accident at no fault of your own and you have to have serious surgery to save you life and there is NO beds in the ICU. Should we put you in the hallway? Or maybe the waiting room? What would be your suggestion? This is why the hospitals have finally pulled their collective heads from their asses and are for this.

  15. "Very Stable Genius" on November 17, 2020 at 8:43 pm said:

Masks matter. Why culturally have we always turned or put our hand over our nose when we sneeze? Why do we have sneeze guards at restaurants?

As far as the math, look at Sweden.

  16. Oh my VSG, look at the math in Sweden indeed! When COVID gets through with those arrogant Swedes only 99.9993836185% of them will have survived.

  19. VSG – cite?

How about COVID-19 Data Repository by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University? Based on my review of all of the “data” that is out there, this is the most consistently reliable and unbiased information.

Anominous. USAToday article? Really? A July OPINION article from The McPaper? The article is horribly short on actual statistics and data, but of course it is clearly labeled an OPINION story. But here is the easy math, based on the source cited above, the COVID-19 Data Repository by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University:

    Population of Sweden: 10,230,000
    COVID-related deaths: 6,321
    6,321 is .06178886% of 10,230,000

So, my number was slightly off. Only 99.99993821114% of those Swedish scofflaws are likely to survive.

Notice how I didn’t call you or anyone else dumb? See how that simple that is to do?

  20. Iamsameperson on November 18, 2020 at 1:36 pm said:

    Swenson population is 10,099,265

    6321 COVID deaths

If you use your simple math you like to talk about, off the top of my head, looks like Sweden has over a 99.9% chance of not dying from COVID.

I’m with Oliver, I’ll take a 99.9% survival rate and not lock anything down.

I’ll take those odds with and not shut anything down.

  23. Damn VSG, looks like Oliver schooled you! Hopefully the burn unit has a bed for you.

  24. Close relative works as a nurse in a mid sized city in this state. Her hospital has plenty of beds but not enough nurses. Why not enough nurses I asked? They have several out with Covid.

Now that the city will be enforcing a fake mask law, I’m sure our Covid positives will dry up..NOT…Your a bunch of knee jerk fools to think you can hide from this Flu.

So, if masks aren’t working there, what makes you think me wearing a mask to the Barrel House is going to do any good?
