This gets funnier by the second. Pity Pants Pat over at the Wuss College posts a novel (again) about the kerfuffle over Lucas Leach’s decision to attack Scott Heidepriem over owning a Volkswagon (or something like that). In his long rant, not one mention of Dave Knudson’s almost identical resume to Scott’s, just more digging up the past that no one gives a rat’s ass about;

Geting back to the criticism, many of the same people who are howling about it in July of 2009 were doing the reverse in February and March 2008 when the South Dakota Democrats came after Steve Kirby. While Republicans did it with a press release this week, back then, people involved with the party and the Johnson campaign went so far as to not just criticize Steve Kirby’s success, but they staked out the Kirby home and stalked his family.

Well, sorry Pat, there is a difference, for one Kirby was running for a federal position not a state position, and YES he was going to announce, that’s why the Johnson camp was following him around. Rumor has it he had already filmed a TV spot in the Black Hills. I guess if I ‘wasn’t’ running for office, why would I film a TV commercial? Anyway, back to the topic at hand, when are you and the SD GOP going to discuss Scott’s twin brother, Dave Knudson?

Who is the real phony running for governor?

When are South Dakotans going to freaking wakeup and realize the SD GOP are the real ‘Phonies’. As reported widely by many SD news organizations, the SD GOP’s Lucas Leach decided to attack Scott Heidepreim for being a phony because he drives a nice car or something like that. The hypocrisy couldn’t be more obvious. First they attacked Scott for switching parties, living in a mansion and the car he drives. I wonder if they know they have someone in their party that fits that description and he is running for governor, Dave Knudson. To be honest I don’t care about any of this stuff and I don’t support any of the candidates running in either party but I just wanted to point out the hypocrisy.

– Dave switched from Democrat to Republican (I am assuming once he started making the big bucks).

– Dave drives a very nice SUV, not sure what kind it is, but when I saw him in it, I recall it was either a Cadillac Escalade or a Mercedes SUV, not sure, but it was very nice.

– As reported by the Argus Leader last year, Dave lives in a home worth over $600,000, hardly a bungalow.

– He held a $1,000 a plate BBQ fundraiser, doubt many ‘regular folks’ were in attendance.

I’m glad no one from the SD Democratic Party decided to report this stuff, why lower themselves to the ratfink level of the SD GOP. I hope they resist the urge to be no good muckrakers. But I’m not below it.

“Look mom, I’m standing in a cornfield, does that makes me a man of the people?” – Lucas Leach, head of some SD political group

Trust me, I am not a fan of Scott Heid-a-casinolegislation for the Democratic candidate for governor, but I will say he is probably the only one in the party that has enough clout to raise money. I am still personally holding out for Chris Nelson to run as an independent.

But, I will have to admit, the SD GOP’s response to Scott running is laughable at best;

“This is somebody who used to be Republican, or at least we thought he was, and then he switched and became a Democrat and you know the reality is these are great questions for him. Why does he think he can play for one team, switch to the other,” South Dakota Republican Party Executive Director Lucas Lentsch said.

Really? Lucas Leach? That’s the best you can come up with? Maybe you should ask Republican candidate Knudson the same question? Why did he switch parties once he became rich . . . hmmm.

The Republicans also said that Heidepriem has cancelled his country club membership, sold his BMW, and is selling his house to try and look like a man of the people. But the Republicans would not provide KELOLAND News with any documentation to back-up those claims, and Heidepriem denies those claims.

Sell his BMW! Say it ain’t so! Like when Republican Kirby put his classic Porsche speedster in storage when he ran for governor? I would never give up my German automobile! Sell his house? Good luck with that, the only thing that place would be good for is a hotel or an orphanage. As for quitting the country clubs, good for him, those places suck anyway. But I hope he keeps his (fake) Italian loafers and man purse.

Scott did have one thing to say that I liked;

“I think its time that we did some things differently in this state. I think it’s time we stopped giving personal contracts to cronies in state government without even opening it up to the bidding process. It’s time to change the way we do business in this state,” Heidepriem said.

I think that is a good start, but will you stop writing legislation that benefits your clients from now on?

There is going to be a lot of broken glass in 2010 to clean up.

It has been almost 40 years since SD Democrats have had a man in the Governor’s office and I’m starting to wonder when they are going to get wise;

So no actual report on when Heidepreim is going to announce his entrance into the contest, but they did get to hear 4 previous candidates talk about why they went wrong.

I imagine the conversation went….

Well, I ran as a Democrat…..

Yeah. Me too. That was a mistake…

In the past, I would agree with Pity Pat, but I think the biggest mistake Dems could make in 2010 is running a former Republican wealthy SF lawyer. It is already pretty obvious that Dave Knudson will win the Republican nomination – another wealthy SF lawyer. The smartest thing Dems could do is to run a small town centrist. I think the problem with the Dems is they have no vision. They keep doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. HELLO! You have’nt won the seat in 40 years! It is time to get a new strategy. I have suggested that Chris Nelson run as an independent candidate. Though I think he would put up a good fight against Steffy in the congressional race, I still give her the bout by at least 7 points. I also like Republican candidate Ken Knuppe, but he is a closet Democrat and the Republicans would never give him the nod.

I agree with Pity Pat’s last comment;

The gubernatorial race could be a long and dirty campaign by the time it’s all over.

Probably, between the Republican candidates anyway.
