Healthcare reform

Public Option fails in Senate, but may be still alive in the House

This shouldn’t surprise any of, the Demorats and Republicants have taken money from the healthcare industry for years, that is who they represent, not us.

There was several polls that came out recently that said anywhere from 55-65% of Americans support a public option. So who do these congress critters work for? I think we know the answer to that question.

Why don’t you just switch your party affiliation already and get it over with;

Via Ezra Klein, this heartening news. As Howard Dean said, there’s simply no point without a good public option:

According to Congress Daily, the CBO says attaching the public plan to Medicare rates will save even more money than originally thought:

In a bid to wrangle concessions from the Blue Dog Coalition on healthcare reform, House leaders Thursday released CBO estimates for liberals’ preferred version of the public option that show $85 billion more in savings than for the version the Blue Dogs prefer.

Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, D-S.D., a Blue Dog co-chair, said any possible new momentum toward a public option tethered to Medicare rates is, in part, “because of the cost issue” and the updated CBO score.

The original House bill required the public plan to pay providers 5 percent more than Medicare reimbursement rates. But as part of a package of concessions to Blue Dogs, the House Energy and Commerce Committee accepted an amendment that requires the HHS Secretary to negotiate rates with providers. That version of the plan will save only $25 billion.

In total, a public plan based on Medicare rates would save $110 billion over 10 years. That is $20 billion more than earlier estimates, a spokesman for House Speaker Pelosi said.

In other words, the conservatives want to spend $85 billion more than the liberals do. Moreover, the CBO is estimating savings to the government. That is to say, the $85 billion reflects reduced federal spending on subsidies because premiums in the public plan will be lower. Savings to individuals and businesses paying lower premiums will be much larger than $85 billion, and politically, much more important.

Healthcare reform advocate and former Mayo clinic director, MICHAEL J. MYERS, slams the lucrative industry

Okay, read the whole column, especially the parts where we are fat and in denial, but my favorite part is the list of how much non-profit and not-for-profit healthcare administrators make;

They are seen briefly by a physician, who, if a hospitalist or family practitioner, is paid between $200,000 and $350,000 annually.

They might encounter an orthopedic surgeon for the repair of a shoulder, hip or knee. Orthopedic surgeons report incomes in the $380,000-to-$610,000 range. They might be introduced to an interventional cardiologist earning $450,000 to $690,000 or to a cardiac surgeon who earned $1.2 million last year. Upon leaving the “nonprofit” hospital, they might pass by the chief financial officer’s office. Health system CFOs generally are paid in the $220,000-to-$310,000 range. Nonprofit health system chief executive officers are paid $500,000 to $1.4 million depending upon size.

Gee, I wonder why it costs $50 for a freaking Tylenol.

But I love Mike’s ending;

They are nice people. They love their children. They exercise. But today, they are worried – worried about Obama, worried about health care reform, worried about big government.

They shouldn’t be.

Medicine is an epidemic in the United States.

You are right, the healthcare debate is about greed, the greed of the insurance companies

Not sure what this letter writer was getting at?

I was taught when I was young that communist and socialist countries were evil because they taught their children to turn their parents in for not following the party line, had the death penalty for using the wrong drugs, put people in prison with no charges and no chance of going to court, worshiped science instead of God, had so-called re-education camps that would brainwash/enlighten the masses so they knew their leaders were right and not only condoned but promoted torture. I still pray the United States can stop becoming like the rest of the world and set the example that so many people believed we were capable of. The recent debate over health care shows that greed still is a hard vice to overcome, but I am still hopeful that good can triumph over greed, fear and hatred.

So, what do you consider the ‘Right Drugs’ are? And, I have yet to meet someone who worshipped ‘Science’. I only hope that sanity and common sense can triumph over greed, fear and hatred.
