Billion takes another shot at the street vacation

Usually when a zoning issue like this is defeated (Item #20), it takes a couple of months before they come back with an alternative plan. I’m not sure if I am missing something here, but it doesn’t seem like there is much of an alternative plan, I guess we will have to wait to hear the new testimony tomorrow night at the council meeting. The council will be setting a date of hearing for August 11.

Powder House Part II

I am also hearing there will be quite a bit of testimony for rescinding the Powder House road name change. I know the armies on both sides of the issue are lining up the troops, remember, NO REPETITIVE testimony, or the mayor will lecture us about how we are supposed to address OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS in OUR PUBLIC BUILDING on OUR OWN TIME. He seems to have trouble with that 1st Amendment thingy.

Public Services meeting could be informative . . .

I guess the presentation of the proposed 85th street interstate interchange will have a host of presenters, including private developers/landowners, county officials, state officials and city officials from Tea & Harrisburg. I suppose a few stragglers from the mayor’s office will chime in also.

So now the construction manager for the Indoor Aquatics center is spreading mis-information

If there is one thing that has been consistent about the indoor aquatic center, it has been lies, broken promises and half-truths. The Argus Leader did a video interview today with a construction manager of the site, he was explaining the three different pools that were going to be built inside the building, and when he was talking about the therapy pool he said it would/could “be used by the veterans from the VA.”

Nobody from the VA has ever confirmed this, but the administration, the parks department and NOW the construction manager continue to peddle this to the public.

Enough! Until you get a signed agreement with the VA about this, stop telling people that is the case. Now there will be nothing stopping veterans from using the pool on their own time, but don’t affiliate that with the VA.

Sioux Falls City Council meeting tidbits (7/14/2015)

Once again, this weeks city council meeting is full of surprises;

Item #1, approval of contracts; ‘Cold weather gear’ I guess the city has to buy it’s employees coats and gloves.

Item #7, Doesn’t look like they are really fixing the city’s ticket fee structure, just letting the facilities decide for all other events;

Fees for all other admissions shall be established by the facility operator after consultation with the city finance director. The fee shall not exceed $3.00.

Item#14 & #16, approving more diagonal parking Downtown, will the spots be metered (especially between 6th and 5th on Phillips?

Item #17, Hiring a Construction manager at Risk for a ‘proposed’ administration building. While the council has already been briefed on this, they haven’t even presented a solid plan yet and they are already considering hiring a construction manager. How did that work out for the Events Center?

Item#21, The Big one of the night, a reconsideration of renaming Powder House Road to Veterans Parkway;

RECONSIDERATION (FROM THE JULY 7, 2015, CITY COUNCIL MEETING):  2nd Reading: AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SIOUX FALLS, SD, AMENDING THE CODE OF ORDINANCES OF SAID CITY BY CHANGING A STREET NAME.

This is interesting, we now find out that not many Vets and Veteran groups were NOT involved with this decision, so now they may rescind it. I think Russell Avenue Veterans Parkway would be more appropriate.

Yeah, let’s talk ‘Ridiculous’

So the Mayor is claiming he had no clue they kept redoing his streets (since he was mayor) and downgrading there grades;

Huether was out of town on vacation last week, according to spokeswoman Heather Hitterdal. Hitterdal added in an email that any insinuation that Huether used his influence to get his road repaired “is a ridiculous accusation.”

Well he wasn’t on vacation Tuesday, because he ran the meeting. As for his ‘influence’ one could argue there is a lot of people who live in that neighborhood who have lots of influence, but isn’t it ironic all this street work happened AFTER Huether became mayor. This isn’t something Ellis pulled out of his butt (BTW, one of his best investigative stories, H/T to Sneve also) Ellis has been working on this story for more then 3 years, but for some reason ‘the most transparent city hall in history’ wasn’t giving him the information he needed. Until now. And like when Huether was asked about the quit claim deed at Spellerberg at a ‘Shut up & Listen’ session, he plays dumb.

Pay Day Petition ready to roll

Months ago a survey of SD Bread for the World members yielded strong support for endorsing a ballot initiative to limit payday loans and car title loans to 36% annual interest. (Current average annual interest is 574%.)  Thus, BFW-SD is one of the endorsers.

The organizers have been meticulous in their planning. Now the signature gathering begins.
3 ways you can help:
1. Find more endorsers.
Think of individuals or groups whose names would make positive influence in your part of the state, and ask for endorsements and let organizers know. (steve@hildebrandstrategies.com)
2. Contribute funds.
Every effort like this has expenses. Consider sending a donation (not tax-deductible) to South Dakotans for Responsible Lending, PO Box 709, Sioux Falls 57101.
One suggestion is to give as much as you would be willing to spend to get your granddaughter out of her payday loan.
3. Gather signatures. Lots of people are needed on this.
1. Ask if registered voter in SD.  2. Offer the Attorney General’s explanation.  3. Watch the signing of all 12 signatures on the page. (Don’t sign it yourself. Sign someone else’s petition.) 4. Sign at the bottom as circulator only before a notary, and send in the page.

A SD-specific website will be up soon: http://captheratesd.com/
Already there’s info on facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/southdakotansforresponsiblelending
It’s not a partisan issue. All sorts of people agree that exploiting the poor is wrong. Every day in our state, people are caught in these dramatic cycles of debt. Better alternatives exist and are developing in the country. Let’s join the growing number of states with a 36% cap. Your effort on this will have a huge payoff in terms of improving the lives of thousands of vulnerable people in our state!
Thanks for your help.
