Argus Leader endorses Neitzert & Stehly

Congrats to Greg and Theresa;

Theresa Stehly is the best choice to succeed Staggers in the At Large seat on the City Council.

The fact that Stehly has allied with Staggers on several high-profile issues doesn’t alone justify this choice. Stehly rises above the two other candidates – John Paulson and Ritch Noble – because of her knowledge of city issues. The benefit of her activism over the years, whether on the Drake Springs Pool or boulevard gardens or snow gates, is that she built a working knowledge of the details of local government.

We recommend Greg Neitzert as the best candidate in the Northwest District.

In addition to volunteering for the zoning panel, Neitzert was deeply involved in the debate over the rewriting of city zoning regulations, the Shape Places ordinance. In that role, he became one of the most knowledgeable people in the city on issues of growth and development, what smart planning should look like, and how our city should look and feel in the coming decades.

He is the most prepared in this field to step in to help set the path for the City Council and the city.

And ALMOST endorses Steele and Starr;

Selberg’s opponent, Manny Steele, is a former state legislator with a long history in state government. This experience doesn’t always translate to local politics, however. Steele is an earnest public servant who brings and appropriate level of skepticism to any debate.

It really comes to a pick between Pat Starr and Tamara Enalls-Fenner. In this case, a Northeast District voter would be well served by either of the top candidates. But that’s not how voting works.

Starr, a marketing and advertising professional, has a good suggestion regarding the planned parking ramp on the site of the failed Banks shared use project. Starr suggests holding off building the ramp and moving on to other worthwhile projects around the city to allow time for more ambitious ideas for a key piece of downtown property. It’s a useful suggestion that demonstrates his practical approach.

Cameraman Bruce and Scott discussion of Sioux Falls voting patterns was interrupted by slanted a question having nothing to do with the topic.

What does the Events Center failures (or successes?), forcing an illegal interference in a pool vote and the waste of federal money on railroad tracks have to do with voting pattern studies?

Where are the Sioux Falls City Council Candidate latest financial reports?

image001

We decided to ask this guy, city clerk, Tom Greco.

The latest financial report was due on Thursday at 5 PM. Since then, only one candidate, Ritch Noble, report has been filed online. I was looking forward to analyzing the reports over the weekend and getting them to my readers, won’t happen now until Monday night.

Bruce decided to track down the city clerk today at the auditor’s office before they closed at noon to ask him why the reports have not been filed. While Tom answered Bruce’s questions, outgoing city clerk Lorie Hogstad (who is training Tom and really should have been answering the question) was hiding 20 feet away and pretending it was not her concern.

Tom told Bruce that he hasn’t posted them yet because he had to ‘audit’ them first and make the candidates aware of any amendments. While that is mighty nice of Tom to do, they should have been posted in the original submitted condition and amendments posted later. Apparently the city clerk feels he must protect candidates from any embarrassment they may incur by not being able to use a calculator and pen properly. I wonder if he supplied a complimentary bottle of white out also?

This financial report is one of the most important before an election, it gives voters an opportunity to see what special interests butter the bread of the candidates, and the city clerk’s office has failed horribly getting the information out there. I don’t blame Tom that much as I do the person training him. Lorie Hogstad should have known better.

Doesn’t anyone find it a bit ironic that one of the competitors (Ritch Noble) of Mayor Huether’s favorite candidate (Paulson) has his financials posted early? How is this fair to Noble?

Are games being played? Wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

It gets better, Greco tried to kick Bruce out of the auditor’s office at noon today while other media remained. Bruce said he was staying as long as the other media stayed. Greco did let him stay and apologized.
