What does it say about our society, when a school district, which pays rather well for these positions, has to struggle to find substitute teachers and bus drivers? No wonder some politicians think that they can get away with channeling our children into non intellectual jobs under the auspices of the almighty “Workforce Development” banner.

  2. I dont know…13-15/hr depending onnwhat time you arrive & leave the school, only getting paid once a month, and not consistently even at same school each time (especially for those with kids in the school district who pick up/drop off) may not entice a lot of people considering how a lot of kids are these days. Yes, the majority are really great kids but the few bad apples may impact decisons for some who may otherwise would have applied.

It’s my understanding that substitue teachers make about $135 per day, which comes out to $17 per hour, and actually more when you consider they probably don’t teach for each period. And the last time I saw bus driver jobs offered in town, the pay was $17 per hour, too, and there is plenty of time with that job to take a nap between your driving as well…..(….”Oh crap, its 3 o’clock!”)

As far as the kids, well, they just want to be entertained now days given all of the medias they are exposed to and a good teacher knows how to teach through entertaining:
