UPDATE: I didn’t think about this until this afternoon but also if there’s anybody sitting on the current council that is running for reelection as an incumbent or if any councilor decides to run for Mayor that’s a huge conflict to be picking your own election date for a campaign you’re running in. Why? Because by picking a June date that means fewer months of campaigning and having to raise less money.
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, we know the scenario. The State DoDo birds we call our legislature decided to change state law so they could control local elections. Tsk! Tsk! Stay the F’ck out of our elections and start working on your AA and diet plans. Either way, we now have a decision to make, but for some reason our brilliant city council thinks they need to make the decision, but that is NOT how the law is written. It is up to the citizens of this community to decide that date (June or November) not them. So at the informational today (I encourage to watch before forming a opinion) they pitched this legal concept that indeed the citizens do get to choose the election date, BUT NOT for this first election, that was up to them. Bullwash! What needs to happen is a special election in September determining the date of the election, and while they are at it, also put a charter amendment that eliminates the ‘Rex Rolfing/Stehly Rule’ that there has to be a runoff in city council races if no one gets more then 34% or some whacka-doodle thing like that. Make it a plurality so there is no runoff. Barranco suggested this. I think it would be incredibly confusing to voters showing up to vote for council and mayoral candidates and having to choose an election date, they would most likely pick the day they were currently voting, which is a setup because the council is initially leaning towards a June election. One of the arguments they make that they HAVE TO decide the first election date is because candidates and campaigns need to know ASAP. Silliness. Anyone considering running has already kind of made up their minds, they also know that the earliest their would be an election is June and the latest November. The date of the election is of no consequence to the candidate if that decision isn’t made until September. They would only have to adjust their campaign budgets if November was picked. That’s IT! They would also have more time to campaign, which is a good thing locally. I think the city council is on shaky legal ground. I think they know they have to call a special election and let the citizens decide, but instead they continue to eat the Fiddle-Faddle. I would get really weary of chomping on the old maids . . . wait . . . or maybe not
What’s the special of the day? Is that a Saturday Night Special? My Mommy always said I was special. AND, then there are those special announcements, too. But let’s not forget about special needs, special placement, special ways, and that special person in your life. In fact, if you want to go anywhere in life with meaning, it is often important to take a special direction, train, or plane. I think it’s fair to say that special is definitely special unless you especially mess up, which in that case, it becomes especially embarrassing, and a special decision might need to be made to resolve your especially colossal mistake. #IWillJustTakeTheSpecial #ArentYouSpecial? #JustHowSpecialDoYouThinkYouAre? #WhoDoYouThinkYouAreTheCityCouncil?
Since we are a Home Rule Community, we should be holding a Special Election allowing the “Voters” to choose when they want to hold their local election. I feel as a Home Rule Community, the voters could in fact decide which date to hold their election – April, June, or November. This is the point to being a “sovereign community”. As for the City Council debating when to hold the budget session – even if we held city election in June, I would NOT change the charter in terms of our budget session – January 1st is the “State of the City”, July 1st is the day the current Mayor provides a Budget, a Capital Plan, and Financial Impact of the City, while City Council begins holding Informational hearings during the Month of August, while holding the Public Hearing in September, and finally, the 1st and 2nd Readings of the Budget, Capital Plan by September 30. Even i
Even if the new mayor takes office on July 13th, he or she still has 30-60 days to study and review the budget, making such changes to fit their agenda, their promises, their plan, while participating throughout the Budget Session into September. I am not sure why the City Council is worried about it, even if the Election is in November, the budget simply becomes the previous mayor’s final budget. No different than the Governor working through the legislature her 2026 Budget, which goes into effect July 1, 2025 and goes into June 30, 2026 during election time. The current Governor would already have played a huge role in the 2027 budget by the time the new governor takes office on January 2027.
As for the voting, I have no problem with Run Offs, so keep it at 34% with the Run Off for anyone that gets at least 34%. At least the “Voters” get to vote twice, confirming who they want for the next four years.
I moved from Sioux Fall oligarchy into neighboring democracy. What a relief. I know when to vote. It’s not a scavenger hunt for a polling place. Vote topics are not disguised with city attorney linguistics misrepresentation.
I’m thinking of living in Qatar (pronounced Cutter). They give you a jet plane. I don’t like feeling I must fight against this country because of one rogue president. I did fight in combat once for this country for unjustified reasons and got spit on in airports when I came home. I miss respecting god and country. Buddhism and Qatar are sounding good.
