So this video posted 6 months ago. Recently the Canadians used some lines from it in a TV ad over the trade war. The Supreme Court will decide soon whether Trump’s tariffs were legal without congressional approval. I’m with Reagan on what he is talking about (watch the entire video) he basically doesn’t like them and thinks they contributed to the Great Depression. Reagan was an economics major in college. Reagan supported targeted tariffs, as do I, to get American consumers to buy American products, so you would target that specific product with a tariff instead of a blanket one with every product from a specific country like Trump is doing. Reagan was referencing this in the video with semi-conductors. He wanted American manufacturing to buy American conductors instead of cheaper Japanese ones.
As for the Reagan foundation saying they didn’t get permission to use the clip, that point is moot, it is a public document, anybody can use it, even a foreign government. Also, there was NO creative editing in the AD, they just simply played a few lines from the address about the pertinent dangers of tariffs, like isolationism, inflation and high unemployment (it’s coming folks!)

I love how Trump’s Press Secretary is tasked each day with revisionist history. They are claiming Truman’s remodel of the White House was no different then this. Hogwash. Truman was going to take a leak in the middle of the night and he heard a crack under the floorboards in his bedroom. They discovered that after adding the 3rd floor without reinforcing floors 1 & 2 caused the floor beams to start cracking and breaking. Truman had no choice but to remodel or the place was going to fall into itself. There was the controversy of adding the balcony, but it wasn’t a gold plated ballroom double the size of the current white house. I have said that the next president needs to undo all of this in the last year of their first term. I would auction off the ballroom in pieces, make the buyers responsible for removal and take the money raised to rebuild the East Wing to original standards but modernized. I would also restore the rose garden. Trump has done enough damage to this country and it’s reputation we don’t need any reminders of him after he has left the Whitehouse.
I think in Germany after WWII they have some law where you can’t talk about Hitler or Nazis or something. . . just an idea.

Yah, Eureka College. Reagan was right to continue the Carter/Volker high interest rates to kill inflation, but his deregulatory policies led to the greatest stock market crash of the time (October of 1987) since 1929.
But that said, most people understand that tariffs are not good unless they are used surgically and not often. AND, It doesn’t take an Econ major from Eureka to appreciate that 😉
But the thing with Trump and tariffs is that this is about a mobster mentality and tactics to impact, affect, and control politics, policy, and the adjoining economic picture both domestically and internationally. This is not about saving or bringing back manufacturing jobs, rather this is about Trump wanting to control everything and enjoying it. In fact, I would allege that Trump’s attitude change towards the war in Ukraine is not a eureka moment (No pun intended 🙂 ), but rather the result of his gained confidence against Putin given everything that Trump has been through the last few years, where he feels invincible and no longer wants to be Putin’s lap dog no matter what Putin might have on him, and instead wants to play King of the Mountain with Putin, with Trump as the true King when it comes to the future of Ukraine, the war there, and the World’s perception of Trump relative to that war and the entire international picture.
Also, I would even allege that Trump’s current war with the Cartels and Venezuela is less about drugs coming into America and more about who will control it. You know, there’s a school of thought that deep down (I know some might see this as merely a conspiracy theory, but whatever ) the entire World drug trade is not controlled by the Cartels, but that rather they are merely agents of a deeper rogue element made up of Western intelligence agencies and its community who use this cash cow to fund their rogue and clandestine policies, actions, and politics. Thus, I would allege that Trump merely wants a piece of the pie, shall we say, and it will be interesting to see how this turns out because Trump’s ego may have finally met its match with this one…. Because everything that Trump does is from a standpoint of bullying and intimidation…. It’s a mobster mentality once again, and indeed…. AND, I might also add that Trump’s changed attitude towards Crypto and allowing it into our banking system is another example of Trump just doing things to profit, and not doing things for the betterment of society.
As far as the White House, well, when Trump eventually leaves the presidency, what he has built needs to definitely be torn down and replaced with what was there before he returned to power. AND, that goes for any “Arch of Trump” near Arlington as well….
In conclusion, these are very sick and sad times, indeed. The Republicans have allowed themselves to become Vichy Republicans, while the Democrats remind me of the Generals playing the Globetrotters, with the later always winning even though they cheat, don’t follow the rules, and ignore refs….
( and Woodstock adds: “The Generals and The Globetrotters?” ….. “Say, how about banana baseball?” …. “Because these are definitely some times where everything seems to have gone bananas”….. 🙂 …… )
There’s now doubt whether private money was properly pledged for building the big ballroom. It’s likely that area will be a junkyard thru and well beyond the Trump term.
Trump bringing the Navy and 10,000 troops into the Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela could start allied alignment with Brazil and other South American countries. Trump wants a war of any kind be it this hemisphere or with Russia and China. Like everything else, he’ll side step Congress and declare war against some if not all.
ICE is running out of immigrants to arrest. What if there’s a storm of US residents into Mexico looking for asylum in Argentina or Europe? What’s sad is it’ll be mostly Republicans.
