abortion

Of course Fairey didn’t take the photo. F’ing Duh!

You mean Warhol didn’t take this picture of Elvis!? The Shame, The Shame!

Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, where do I begin? As a fan of underground art (come look at my house walls sometime) and having a shrine to my hero, Warhol in my studio (there, I said it, are you happy) I have come to realize that everyone doesn’t understand copyright laws and ‘image borrowing’. Underground art is based on taking something that is mainstream and converting it to something original and anti-establishment. Something Fairey did with the HOPE Obama image. Underground art is kinda the thrift store version of fine art, just as beautiful and useful, but a lot f’ing cheaper. Though I am disappointed that Fairey hasn’t credited the photo, I’m also glad he didn’t. Why? He does not have to. Once you CHANGE something, it becomes yours. And that really is the essence of art. Creating something new, from something old. I would hope the original photographer would be joyous about it – not sure. But I will say this, Fairey’s version is a lot cooler than the original.

Steve, please stop trying to be an art critic and go back to something you are (kinda) good at, selling snake oil.

UPDATE: The press conference where the HOPE photo was taken was about Darfur and Human Rights, NOT abortion, as Mr. DooHickey would like you to believe.

Doughnuts for Choice

Apparently, the term “choice” may only refer to abortions. It seems some right-wing pro-lifers (aka anti-choicers) are all up in arms over the news that some Krispy Kreme Doughnut shops have released the following statement, celebrating Barry’s inauguration this Tuesday.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American’s sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies — just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet ‘free’ can be.

The folks over at the American Life League didn’t care for Krispy Kreme’s liberal use of the word choice.

Since when was choice limited to abortions? Can’t I choose a box of doughnut holes over a classic glazed without being sucked into the abortion debate? I always thought it was a nice thing that we got so many choices in this fine country of ours.

Lawsuit Revived To Identify Abortion Vote Donor

The South Dakota Supreme Court has revived a state lawsuit that seeks to identify the secret donor who gave $750,000 to the failed 2006 effort to outlaw most abortions in the state.

A corporation set up by state Representative Roger Hunt of Brandon made the donation without revealing the contributor’s name.

Secretary of State Chris Nelson went to court to make the donor’s name public, but a circuit judge threw out the lawsuit.

The Supreme Court says a trial should be held to determine if Hunt’s corporation meets the definition of a ballot question committee that must report a donor’s identity.

I’m sure DooHickey is dancing down Cliff Ave. after this anouncement

Planned Parenthood Lays Off SD Director

Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota said the bad economy prompted it to eliminate 9.5 positions, including the director of its two South Dakota clinics.

Kate Looby confirmed she was laid off, and said she understands it was a financial decision.

She has led the clinics since March 2003.

Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Kathi Di Nicola said the organization felt it couldn’t keep its public affairs staffing level and also maintain enough workers for health care services.

She said the other positions cut were in Minnesota, and stressed that the Sioux Falls and Rapid City clinics both will stay open.

Planned Parenthood has 28 clinics and 290 employees in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
