Randy Dobberpuhl for Sioux Falls School Board

randy
Hello South Dacola,
My name is Randy Dobberpuhl and I am running for School Board in Sioux Falls, SD.My family and I have been living in Sioux Falls since 2007. I have two wonderful boys, Coulter and Ryder.
They both attend Harvey Dunn Elementary-Coulter is in 2nd grade and Ryder is in Kindergarten.
My very patient wife, Kersten Dobberpuhl, works for the School District as an Elementary Instructional Coach and has been in the education field since 2003.I work at Minnehaha County Human Services as a case manager with the Safe Home program. We help assist Minnehaha County residents who are experiencing long term homelessness. I have been with this program since we moved to Sioux Falls in 2007. I was able to be a part of this program from the very beginning and helped develop the policies and procedures that have made it a successful program for Minnehaha County.I grew up in Doland, SD and graduated high school from Doland High School in 1996 and went on to attend Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. I graduated from NSU with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with an emphasis on Criminal Justice along with a minor in Psychology.

All through college and my professional career and have played the role of an advocate. I have worked at the Boys and Girls Club in Aberdeen and Sisseton. I have worked with children through the Turtle Creek Youth Program in Redfield, SD. When we moved to Arizona I had the wonderful opportunity to work as a Social Worker with the Hospice program in Parker, AZ. I also assisted with bereavement for children who had lost a love one in our community, helped coordinate volunteers and put together some fundraising events for Hospice.

I currently volunteer with LSS as a mentor to a kindergartner at Mark Twain, Big Brother Big Sister as a big brother to a second grader at Longfellow, and I help with United Way as the co-chair for the government division.

I am running for school board because I have an invested interest with my two boys who currently attend school in the district. I feel I would be a great addition to the current board to help fill a role as a positive advocate and to help open up lines of communication between the employee groups.  According to the Gallup Poll that was taken last year recognition is lacking as well. Our teachers are having to work harder and harder each year and it seems with less and less support. With communication and recognition lacking that will suck the morale out of any business or organization. I want to start discussions on how to improve this and to keep it moving forward.

I think Sioux Falls is heading in the right direction with the multiple pathways to education for graduation. I would love to serve this community as their next School Board member so I would appreciate your vote on April 14th. Please visit my facebook page: Randy Dobberpuhl for School Board.
Thank you,
Randy Dobberpuhl
P.S. No, I do not have a stance on the start date other than I am concerned it had to come to this point! I have some suggestions for the calendar but it is a moot point right now until the election is over.

SF School District puts out ‘advocacy’ against Labor Day start date, possible violation of state election laws

This is the document (fact sheet) that the district is dispersing, (DOC: Combined Student Version with Calendar) notice who the author is and what time it was authored. Deeann is the district’s marketing/communications person.

Sioux Falls Fact Sheet

This is questionable in so many ways;

1) Advocate education being conducted by a government entity against its citizens

a) The schools and school administration is legally to remain neutral during the public debate

b) It is questionable if the Superintendent can even legally weigh in on this issue as a 24 hour staff employee

c) School Board members would be able to discuss this or be part of the debate outside of their official meetings

d) They cannot take part in the debate during school board meetings or during legally called school functions

e) School District employees during working hours campaigning for or against an initiative or referendum is unconstitutional and illegal under South Dakota state law

I. Teachers

II. Staff

III. Superintendent

IV. School Board members during official meetings

2) The likely use of publicly owned resources to print this document

a) A receipt showing payment for the printing would be required to prove otherwise (it will show the use of government resources to pay for anti-citizen campaigning)

b) What time was the printing picked up or the delivery to printer (shows use of government time to campaign)

3) There is time expense used during work hours to construct this document

4) There is time used to distribute the document.

Like I have said in the past, both sides have good arguments, but that discussion and debate shouldn’t cost tax payers money. The school district needs to knock off their campaign, at least during business hours.

Why are students and school administrators against the late start? ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES!

My phone was ringing off the hook today about the Roosevelt students speaking at the SF school district informational meeting Wednesday night about the after Labor Day start.

I will agree with administrators that I think it is wonderful that students came and spoke up Wednesday night. But let’s be realistic folks, most of them are not eligible to vote, they are not parents and business owners AND they don’t don’t pay property taxes. So while we appreciate their opinions, they really don’t get to make the final decision.

So now with the phone calls . . .

The first (and second) was about a person attending the meeting last night, and they overheard a student say that it was announced over the morning messages at Roosevelt HS to come and speak at the meeting and they would get ‘credit’.

I later passed this information on to my favorite gardener, former substitute teacher, pianist and foot soldier, Theresa Stehly. According to the principal of Roosevelt that Theresa interviewed on the phone today, credit was NOT offered, but students were encouraged to attend, and also commended Thursday morning during morning announcements over the HS’s P.A.

Theresa was told by the principal they would welcome a presentation by the Save our Summer group to the student body. I hope the SOS group takes advantage of this opportunity, and I hope the MSM gives equal time and credit to both sides of the issue. It’s an opportunity for great dialogue in our community. Lets face it, both sides have solid arguments.

And here’s the kicker . . .

Roosevelt High School principal and student council advisor both reiterated to Theresa that it would put a hardship on athletic activities. Their fear is that the SD activities association would probably not be flexible in scheduling activities if Sioux Falls changed their school start date to after Labor Day.

Theresa told them that she felt that other communities would follow suit, and the activities association would work to support these changes once they felt the groundswell from the SF policy changes.

While many reasons have been thrown at us about AP testing and Christmas break, it seems the real gorilla in the room is about starting early practices for sports.

There is also a question of state law and the legality of the students being encouraged by administrators to testify against a late start date, this is advocational in nature and kind of sits in a grey area when it comes to elections.

The school district must be very careful to not spend any tax dollars or energy on influencing this election.

I encourage ALL students to come and talk about the issue, but at the end of the day, it’s the parents, tax payers and eligible voters who will make the final decision, not HS football players or cheerleaders.

Finally, I pay for your education, and I don’t take that duty lightly, and fully support it, but I expect the highest level of transparency. This is the first thing we must teach our young minds.

The Sioux Falls School Board wants a ‘compromise’

homan

What is the definition of ‘and’?

When I first watched this story in disbelief (mostly because there is no compromise with the board and Homan) I enjoyed the hilarity of their comments;

“How do we make this so it’s an ‘and’ solution. How do we start school as late as possible and have the semester end in December and maximize the number of instructional days for students?” Sioux Falls School Superintendent Pam Homan said.

And what?! Now that you are threatened with an election that you will lose you decided to work with the group? And I only thought it took physical threats against the school board members to change policy? Boy, I look like a jackass.

“If we had more input, we wouldn’t have acted necessarily to approve that calendar. We would’ve very willingly compromised,” Sioux Falls School Board President Kent Alberty said.

LMAO! Yeah Kent, they have only been asking for 4 YEARS!!!! Maybe you need to clean the wax out of your ears.

My advice to the group is to move forward to the election, and don’t look back. Short timer Homan and the deaf, dumb and blind school board can continue their compromise keepers meeting. Now let’s all say the pledge of allegiance!

It’s all about control

And it seems the SF School District is in control with another big developer

People shook their heads Wednesday at an agreement to transfer a chunk of property from the West Central School District to the larger school district to the east.

A few raised voices. A couple promised to put the matter to a public vote with a petition. Most laughed wryly when a board member welcomed the petition with a frank admission.

“Then it’s out of my hands,” Dennis Husman said.

Once again the citizens are ignored and the big developer wins. Hopefully their petition drive is successful.
