Sioux Falls Mayor Race

I actually got a letter published

From the Argus Leader;

The upcoming Sioux Falls municipal election is important. But I’m not writing this letter to encourage you to vote for a certain candidate. There will be plenty of those suggestions from friends and relatives of the candidates. I’m writing this to encourage you to get informed and vote on April 13.

So what is the most important thing to do first? Register to vote. Today. If you are unsure about party affiliation, register independent. The municipal election does not have primaries, so your party affiliation is moot.

Remember, we will be voting in a mayor and four new councilors. At the least you will be voting for the mayor and the two at-large council seats.

Before researching the candidates, keep in mind that our next mayor and city councilors basically make decisions based on taxes/fees, budgets, city ordinances, infrastructure, code enforcement and customer service to citizens.

This isn’t about education, abortion, religion, gun rights or whether they were born in Kenya or Hawaii. This is important to keep in mind. It makes your decision process easier when you don’t cloud it with fringe issues, especially when the candidates want to talk about quality of life, rainbows and butterflies.

So remember, hiring a city councilor or mayor is like hiring a good accountant. It doesn’t matter if they are a Packers fan, just as long as they can handle your finances fairly, listen to your concerns and do it in a professional manner.

So where to begin?

First, ignore any and all advertising and testimonials directly from the candidates and their minions. As a person who has worked in advertising for almost 20 years, I can tell you this: It’s not all truthful.

The first place to start is reading candidates’ financial reports, which are listed online at www.siouxfalls.org/Council/Cityclerk/election_ information/2010_election. Investigate who is donating to the campaigns and do a Google search of those donors. Are they influential businessmen and women in the community, or are they community advocates? I can’t tell you whether to look on these associations as positive or negative, but I can tell you it is a good starting point.

ext, make a list of things you have concerns about in our community. Also, make a list of things you like about Sioux Falls. From that list, create questions you would ask candidates.

Finally, don’t wait for watered-down forums to meet and get to know the candidates. Get out your list of questions and either e-mail them or call and ask them the questions yourself.

Don’t be hornswoggled. Create a point system with your questions. If you like the way a candidate answered your question, give that person a 5. If you don’t like the answer, give the candidate a 1 and so forth.

Politicians are good at telling you what you want to hear, so if they can’t answer a simple yes-or-no question with a yes-or-no answer, they most likely have something to hide. Finally, after tallying the results, share them with friends and family and have a discussion about it. Debate among your peers is the best way to clean up the remaining cobwebs.

I cannot stress enough that this is an important municipal election. The country and Sioux Falls are struggling to pull out of a deep recession, and the people who will be holding the city’s purse strings literally will change overnight.

I encourage you to register, inform yourself and vote in the April 13 municipal election.

Has SF mayoral candidate Pat Costello hired South Dakota’s number one ad agency to assist with his campaign?

Rumor has it, he has. With over $75,000 in the bank this should come as no surprise that Pat has chosen Lawrence & Schiller as his ad agency. I predicted this awhile back (well because, Sioux Falls municipal politics are as predictable as Joel Rosenthal’s gripes about liberal bloggers), considering one of the founders, Paul Schiller donated to his campaign and one of the current owners, Scott Lawrence also donated to his campaign. That’s how it works at L & S. You donate to campaigns and you get contracts in return (remember the no-bid tourism contracts with the state after giving money to Rounds’ campaign?)

I will say this, L & S has ran many successful state and national campaigns, they have a proven track record.

But mayor of Sioux Falls? LOL!

I can’t wait to see the flashy, slick stuff they produce for Pat, which will turn voters off in an instance. There is a reason why Huether and Staggers are the leading candidates right now, they have taken a grassroots approach and actually decided to ‘TALK TO VOTERS‘. Image that, what a concept? Sioux Falls is still small enough that people know each other, personally, and if you go out and get to know your fellow man, people appreciate it.

Spend all you want Pat avoiding the Joe-Six Pack, it won’t get you elected, but at least Paul and Scott will make a couple of bucks from your attempt.

An open invitation

I invite any Sioux Falls council or mayoral candidate to contact me about having a guest post on South DaCola telling me about their platform I also may send you some questions to answer. Contact me at fb.art@sio.midco.net.

On a similar note I see Jim Entenman has quite the challenger;

Michael Jones • Age: 41 • Spouse: Stephanie

Education: Bachelor’s in applied management from Huron University; master’s in education from University of Sioux Falls.

Job: Chief instructor at South Dakota Army National Guard

Experience: Several leadership positions in the military, strong interest in government.

Fun Fact: Has a twin sister.

Three words that describe you: Driven, compassionate, family-oriented.

Why should people vote for you?: “I have the leadership, work ethic and background to serve effectively on the council. I realize that people want to have their concerns heard, and I’m willing to listen and work hard on their behalf.”

Events center: Against. “I think it would be good for our community. I’m concerned about the funding part of it. I don’t think we should raise taxes to build it. It would be better if the facility could be self-supporting.”

The last part will make this race interesting considering Jim sat on the Event Center task force. I’m glad to see Jim has a good challenger, I just hope his popularity as a businessman in the community doesn’t cloud people’s judgement.

More people in the mix for the SF municipal elections

Looks like April 13 is getting more and more interesting. Better hope there isn’t a winter storm that day or STORMLAND TV News won’t know what to cover.

Newcomers:

AT-Large ‘A’

Jesus Ramirez (and no, he’s not a carpenter). According to his statement he is employed by Black Hills Special Services and is also co-owner of La Voz Hispana which is a local Hispanic newspaper. His wife works for HyVee.

AT-Large ‘B’

Michael Jones is a full-time SD Army National Guardsman and his wife works for the SF School District. I am glad to see someone is running against Jim Entenman.

Central District

James Milne works for Soukup Construction and his wife works for Avera Mckennan. I also expect another candidate to announce by tomorrow for the central district.

Is Sioux Falls Mayoral Candidate Mike ‘Premier’ Huether polling people and asking what would make a good mayor?

Untitled-15

You know how the old saying goes, “If you have to ask . . .”

A South DaCola foot soldier sent this to me, and it is of no surprise. I wonder if Mike realizes that being mayor of Sioux Falls isn’t a real prestigious job? It’s a job you would really want, really, really want. Not just to help your buddies (like King Dave has) but to help the regular folk. I wonder if Mike is getting caught up in winning instead of governing? Wanna know what the people of Sioux Falls want? Knock on some doors.

I just received a survey call that eventually revealed itself to be a Huether pollster. It started off sensible enough – I have to hand it to his campaign for that. They asked which candidate I plan to vote for, and the two most important issues. They then went through each candidate, and my feelings for each…along with that same question about the current mayor, council, and a couple of organizations.

I laughed at one point, though, and told the pollster they needed one more choice. The question was where I get my candidate information, and the choices included:

1. Candidate’s websites
2. Candidate’s commercials
3. Billboards
4. Local newspaper and TV news
5 – 7. Can’t recall but very similar press-release outlets.

I told the pollster they needed an eighth category for independent blogs.

It was after this point that it became clear that it was a Huether poll, as I was read a handful of statements from him and asked to rate them from 1 – 10. They concluded with whether these statement made me change my choice to him.

Whatever happened to good old fashioned knocking on doors? What does SF have? 60-70,000 registered voters? Oh, that’s right, one candidate has been doing that for over two years, and guess what, his name isn’t Mike, Pat, Bill or Vernon.
