. . . the county wants the city to charge sales taxes at the fair then give that revenue to them? Huh?

Commissioners are proposing that the city begin charging sales tax at the fairgrounds and, in return, give them back about $50,000 a year.

Are our local politicians getting dumber by the day? Believe it or not Vernon ‘The Sweet Velvet Hammer’ Brown was the voice of reason;

Councilor Vernon Brown said he’s not opposed to the county’s suggestion but would like to know what kind of economic impact the fairgrounds has on the city. He added that the city already does some in-kind help for the fairgrounds and has improved some of its access roads.

Exactly. If you want $50,000 from us – just ask. I’m not opposed to charging the sales tax, but we shouldn’t be giving it to the county. Like Vernon says, we do plenty with the roads around the fairgrounds.

  1. The county should capitalize on city ignorance. Example, they installed a redlight camera with revenue to the camera company and tickets they must refund. It should be mandatory for the mayor and council to show the forehead ‘L’ hand sign before public meetings.

  2. Essentially, they want the city to create a “sales tax TIF”. I characterize this as some pretty creative thinking by the County Commishes. If the Fairgrounds were to be 100% dependent on this revenue stream – with NO other help coming from the city, I think that would be agreeable to me. But then, I have nada to say about it.

  3. PL – I’m glad to see you are getting your sense of humor back.

    RF – Here’s the deal, there is no way of tracking the revenue from the fair when it goes thru the state. Basically they are asking for $50,000. So why not just ask?

  4. perhaps they want the city to pay for the money kathy gourley stole, since she isn’t paying it back.

  5. I said a better sentence for her would to make her the Fair’s slave for 10 years doing grounds maintenance.
