This is an awesome story about community involvement and organization. More people are becoming wise to the evils of code enforcement in our town and now there is serious backlash. Hopefully the West Sioux neighborhood will form an organization to and push back on the Events Center. Remember people, this thing isn’t built yet, and the bonds haven’t been taken out.

  1. Remember that city civil procedures are unconstitutional per state supreme court. You can have a car lot on your block. Worse, there will be massage parlors and nude strip bars everywhere. The city doesn’t go to court anymore because they automatically lose. There’s something called democracy. They should see if this form of government could work for them.

  2. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, chickens are legal. Roosters are not – it’s the crowing thing. There is also a limit on the number of chickens, something like 6-8.

I’m sure some of the wealthier outlying burbs outlaw them. It’s so “poor” to eat the eggs of your own chickens.

  3. Oh no. They eat the free-range chicken eggs they buy at Lund’s, Byerly’s, or Trader Joe’s.

  4. Byerly’s, the only grocery store deli I have ate at that tasted better then any fine dining establishment in SF. But I will say, I had a some chicken prosciutto potato soup at M.B. Haskett’s the other day (formerly Michelle’s) and just about creamed my undies. Yum.

  5. If we allow goats, we won’t have to worry about street cleaners or lawnmowers for that matter. I have often felt the city should have a herd they manage with the parks. One goat shepard is probably cheaper then 30 pimple faced teenagers riding lawnmowers.

  6. But we cannot buy the goats for the city until Entenman gets a chance to corner the market for them.

  7. First came the chicken then the egg or maybe the egg was first. This is another something for the council to debate even tho they have no authority in this government. Meanwhile the mayor will build an inferior events center and skim from unaudited city contracts.

  8. My prediction…..

The structures that shelter all of these animals are going to become as much of an issue as the animals themselves…….

Think………scrap lumber, scrap fencing, blue tarps……

An opponent gave testimony regarding this at Friday’s meeting. The code enforcement officer responded that all of these buildings would be considered an accessory use and REQUIRE a building permit. How many of the exisitng chicken coops in town do you think had a building permit!!??

  9. There is a way around that. If it is free standing and does not have a foundation, I think you can get away with not having a building permit. Don’t quote me on that, but I’m thinking that unless you are building an actual breeder’s kennel for dogs, I doubt many people take out a permit to build a doghouse for Fido.

  10. There are restrictions on the chicken coop in MN. Not sure what they are, since I’m a renter, not an owner. I think tarps and metal, except for the “chicken wire”, are out. No tin roofs, blue tarps, etc.

  11. I think that stuff is fine as long as it is out of view (privacy fence, etc.) I just get real nervous telling other people what they can have in their own yard as long as it is not affecting your neighbor.
