Making school board and municipal elections easier and more affordable to voters is a no-brainer

Why has this idea taken so long to take off?

Business Manager Todd Vik said a proposed change in state law would let the district scrap precincts in favor of 10 or so voting centers, each of which would be open to all eligible voters. Networked electronic voting books at each polling place would ensure no one votes twice.

I have often wondered why we haven’t done all elections in the city like this? I know for a fact that city clerk Debra Owen has always pushed to make city elections more accessible and I think this is the time to implement such a program. There are many benefits to; you can still keep the paper ballot and you save money by having fewer precincts and you encourage voting. I have often been an advocate of holding elections on Saturdays and Sundays (A Bob Dole idea) but since that may never happen I think this is a great solution. I have often felt that the city fathers prefer making elections complicated that way fewer voters turnout to the polls, which benefits them. Remember, Mayor Munson was elected by fewer then 9% of Sioux Falls residents. Is that even democratic?

Mike Rounds the ‘do nothing governor’ will try to end his last term in style

By leaving the budget problems to the next governor and legislature. Stay classy Mike;

Rounds has proposed using $32 million in reserve funds to balance the state budget for the year beginning July 1. But the governor has also told lawmakers that the gap between ongoing revenue and spending could grow to more than $100 million in the following year, which begins in July 2011.

That projected budget gap would exceed the remaining reserves. Legislative leaders say any cuts made in the next budget will make the following year’s budget problems easier to solve.

This does not surprise me. The only thing Mike has done during his two terms is reward himself and his friends. But who can blame him? I blame the citizens of SD for #1, re-electing the jackass, #2, allowing him to get away with it #3 allowing the legislators to allow him to get away with it.

Apathy is to blame for our economic struggles, statewide and nationwide.

Downtown Vernon BrownKnows respond to the snowgates issue on his website

snowgate

Vernon responds to all the ANON people out there;

Thank you for the comments on the snow gates posting. I especially appreciate Theresa Stehly courageously putting her name to her comments rather than doing it annonymously. Theresa and I recently had what I found to be a productive phone discussion about this issue and others. I respect her passion for this and other issues. Here are a couple follow-ups:

You stinky rotten ANON people, what do you know? Especially you Costner. Go dance with the wolves or something.

  • Further investigation – I committed to Theresa that I’d call the vendor she referenced. I placed that call Friday and left a message.

Yeah, and I had tea with the tooth fairy today. By the way, her unicorn says hi.

  • 40% increased cost – “Costner” asked how snow gates can add 40% to the cost of snow removal. This goes beyond the intial cost of equipment. It’s the extra time it takes to plow a street with the gates. Plow operators can’t go as fast with snow gates. The biggest expense in any snow removal is overtime, or in the case of the latest historic event, holiday pay. In that $1.8 million event, the snow gates would have cost an extra $720,000. However, the major point is that they wouldn’t work anyway. Vendors say up to 12 inches. In practice, it’s typically anything more than eight inches.

Actually several communities says it saves time, because you don’t have to go back and clean out windrows in intersections AND you don’t have to slow down to use snowgates. Did you watch the video? But more importantly this is about public safety and damage to vehicles. And furthermore some cities have used the gates in up to 30″ of snow. As for your fuzzy math, we can tell you are a marketing person and not an accountant.

  • Argus Story – For more on this issue click here to read a recent story. Note the quote from Bismarck’s assistant city administrator that snow gates don’t clear your driveway like you shoveled.

No they don’t, but instead of scooping 4 feet of snow out of the driveway, you scoop 4 inches. This last snowfall I went out with a shovel RIGHT AFTER  the snowplow came by. Some of it was so hard, I actually was throwing chunks of ice-snow the size of field rocks instead of scooping. This is assanine. I pay taxes to remove snow from my street, I don’t pay them to push that snow into my private drive.

I live on an emergency route. If anyone would love to have snow disappear from the end of my driveway, it’d be me. That is if they would truly work. I will continue the research. However, it is all about priorities and for me my priority would be to save the extra 40% for badly needed street repairs come spring. That’s where I see demand from citizens for more improved services.

So when is the city gonna start spending money on the streets instead of monkey crappers? Just wondering. Vernon, I don’t think snowgates would work on all the crap you spread. I’ll have all the ANON people clean it up.

Teabagger for Governor?

I can’t wait to hear even more quotes from Mr. Howie, here is a little sampling of what we can expect;

“I think I’m getting in right on time,” he said. “I know that we are entering a race where experienced politicians already have a lot of money and organized machines.”

Oh, and they are about 1,00o times smarter then you.

Howie’s speech Friday was short and to the point: He pledged to get government out of people’s lives, and he vowed to protect unborn children. Hunting and the Second Amendment also would be protected in a Howie administration, and he said he would advocate state sovereignty against intrusive federal policies. “I don’t have the financial support of the political elite, but what I do bring is an understanding of what made our country great,” he said.

Guns and anti-choice is what made our country great? The pen is mightier then the sword. I have often said the press had a bigger role in the Revolution then the army did and as for abortion, when are you gonna wake up and realize that a majority of the country is pro-choice?

“I believe there are 600,000 South Dakotans who are unhappy with experienced politicians. If every one of them send me a dollar, I’m already ahead.”

Even if all of your supporters sent you $6,000 a piece you couldn’t hit that number. But hey, he has the teabaggers behind him;

Barb Lindberg, the president of the Citizens for Liberty Tea Party in Rapid City, said the group includes nearly 1,500 people who have diverse viewpoints. She credits Howie with getting the group engaged in local and state government. “We are a force that has to be reckoned with right now when we step into those different arenas,” Lindberg said.

Yeah, you keep drinking that kool-aid, ah, I mean, telling yourself that. Go get’em tiger!
