Mayor Huether in a Huff?

I found this on Steve Hildebrand’s FB page;

I bet I’ve spoken to more than 100 people about this project – all who believe it’s important and a great step forward for downtown and Sioux Falls in general.

I’ve also spoken directly to Mayor Huether about it. He’s absolutely got his heels dug in on this one and says “they will not get a TIF.” When I asked him why he was opposed to a TIF for this $29 million project with tremendous economic impact for our city, he literally stormed off in a huff. Really? Seems like when a taxpayer asks a public official to explain their position, the could do just that – without getting all uptight.

For the life of me, I can understand why Mayor Huether would oppose this important project for Sioux Falls. If you believe this project is important, please call, email or talk to Mayor Huether in person. Please also share your thoughts with members of the SF Planning Commission and the City Council. We need their support to make this project possible.

For the record, I am against this TIF, but I am bias, I don’t believe in TIF’s. Over the past two years we have had record building permits, and NO TIF’s were granted. Are they needed? Or can private enterprise roll on it’s own? Playing the Devil’s advocate, let’s say I am for TIF’s, the biggest issue with this one is it is too large. I think if they scaled it back by 75% they would have a better chance.

As for the mayor, he doesn’t play well with others, and that is becoming more evident.

UPDATE:Is the city moving towards eliminating free pool passes?

passout

UPDATE: As I suspected. (Doc)

I’ve heard rumors over the past week that the Parks department is trying to figure out how to support the new indoor aquatics center, one of the proposals on the table is to eliminate the free pool passes for impoverished kids. Not sure if this is true, but it would open up a big can of worms, that would be much bigger then just raising revenue for the pools.

There is to be a presentation on Tuesday at the informational meeting. The docs aren’t posted yet, but it will be interesting to see if the topic is brought up.

I have said all along, subsidizing the new indoor aquatic center is going to cost taxpayers millions, maybe the city is realizing this is going to be a costly adventure.

The Daily Breakdown

Here are some interesting stories South DaCola Soldiers sent me over the past few days;

• Hey, but the siding on the Events Center is NOT ‘Structural’. Except when it falls on you!

• This is what happens when we let our police force act like the military.

• Guess who’s neighborhood is getting their street re-surfaced AGAIN!

• Mike Rounds, still a fake and a joke.

• Chuck Luden sends me more strange photos.

Does the city need to step up their game in recognizing mental illness in their employees?

After reading Patrick Warren’s story in the Argus this weekend, I got the feeling that the city is making excuses or in denial about how they treat their employees with mental illness. It seems if someone’s behavior is interrupting city business, instead of trying to determine what is going on, they fire the person.

Patrick contacted me several months ago about his story, and after talking to him for over 2 1/2 hours, I decided to pass his story on to John Hult, I felt John would do a better job of telling the story. And I am impressed.

There are some things missing from the story, that eventually I would love to delve into, a lot of it stems from some of the actions of the current police chief and his relationship with the union president for the firefighters.

Patricks’s story about recognizing mental illness in employees is just the tip of the iceberg of what is going on behind the scenes at the Fire Department.
