The cart before the horse

The devil is in the details. Literally when it comes to fire safety.

There is this little document called the ‘Fire Hazardous materials review letter’ that should be drawn up before any building is constructed. The city decided to draw up the letter after construction began on the Aquatics Center? Why?

DOC: Haz review Letter 21 March 2016 (002)

I (Bruce) asked for this to be sent to me in February. It had not been completed until after I asked for it. Last night before the Council (4/5) meeting I asked Dean for it and here it is today (4/6). Look at the meeting dates. It confirms they only had the meeting AFTER my February request.

More short cuts by the administration? Laziness by the fire department? Hazardous materials storage should be addressed before dirt is even moved for a foundation.

Another fine ramrodded project by the Huether administration.

School Board Endorsement; Randy Dobberpuhl

My name is Randy Dobberpuhl and I am running for Sioux Falls School Board.

My wife and I have lived in Sioux Falls since 2007. We have two boys, Coulter and Ryder, who attend Harvey Dunn Elementary.

My wife currently works for the school district as an Administrative Intern and has been in the education field for 13 years.

I currently work for Minnehaha County Human Services as a Caseworker for the Safe Home Program.

We provide permanent housing to our chronically homeless population in Sioux Falls and offer other supportive services.

I am an active volunteer for LSS as mentor, Big Brother Big Sister, and United Way.

I want to:

• Ensure all our students receive access and equity at their neighborhood schools.

• Make sure we are meeting students where they are at to ensure we are providing them the right level of education.

• Look at specializing some of the middle schools to create the same opportunities they may see in high school.

• Help push the full summer school program to help students catch up if needed and to receive their diploma.

My career is in advocacy and I will use my knowledge and skills to advocate for all our students!

I love reaching out and listening to others to gain their perspective on issues.

I believe in open conversations and dialogue to keep things transparent.

I would appreciate your vote on April 12th to bring a Fresh Perspective to School Board.

Property taxes (assessments) are going up in Lincoln County, but not because of the Harrisburg School District

So this email from the super of Harrisburg was recently sent out;

Subject: This is a notification from Harrisburg School District

We are hearing that some people in Lincoln County are seeing that their real estate taxes have taken a big jump.  What we understand is that most of this is due to higher assessments on property.  The Harrisburg School has again not raised their tax levies for the 9th year in a row.  Any increases you may see are not due to an increase by the school.  Jim Holbeck

The assessments are up in Sioux Falls to. Funny how this city is swimming in money and we have all this borrowing power, of course we do, we keep increasing taxes.

Can Sioux Falls Muslims vote in the upcoming municipal election at their precincts?

Kinda. That all depends where their polling places are. It is forbidden by Islam to vote in a church (I am told), doesn’t matter what that holy place is.

Many polling places are in ‘houses of god’ which I would think Jesus would reject.

In all fairness, I am a deist that doesn’t believe in religion, but I also don’t believe tax dollars should be expended leasing or renting churches for polling places when MANY public places exist that we already maintain with our tax dollars, and the only place voting should take place.

Let me make myself clear, don’t care what church you belong to, plain and simple, voting should only take place in public places that already are supported by taxpayers. Government buildings, schools, fire houses, etc.

Seems someone needs to school our county auditor on this.

Indoor pool (future) parking?

sorethumb

The big sore thumb at Spellerberg Park (April 9, 2016)

A foot soldier sent me the following comment in regards to the rumor out there about the need for more parking at the new pool;

I asked the engineer about the “rumor” of diagonal parking on 22nd St. And he said yes, that had been discussed and could be a possibility in the future IF more parking is needed.

22nd street is an emergency route to both the VA and to Sanford. Can you build diagonal parking on an emergency route?
