UPDATE: What was supposed to be announced today is the healthcare systems plans to combat the pandemic, and they did touch on it a little bit in the city’s press conference today. Hopefully we will hear more later. Also, the 2nd part is that at least one of the hospitals have sent all non-essential employees home if they can work from there. Not sure what will happen with the ones that cannot work from home.

Mayor TenHaken said today that there will be an announcement tomorrow. I’ve heard what it is, and it is going to be shocking. I just wanted to be on record to be prepared. I have had several employees reach out to me about what they think it is, but I will leave it for the official announcement. Let’s just say they are preparing for the pandemic to hit Sioux Falls, but not in the way you would expect. Let’s hope the predictions are wrong.

34 Thoughts on “UPDATE: Sioux Falls Healthcare to have a big announcement tomorrow

  1. It’s going too far. By May the citizens will be full on revolt.

Our SD health care resources will be pulled to some degree to help more troubled areas, which will then increase our death rates in South Dakota?

A second wave will come to SD in late summer and early fall due to tourism; and a wave which will be more severe than the first one?

Come on Scott, you’re killing us….

  5. No news at the daily press conference…which Mayor Airpods hasn’t attended for two days in a row now that he had to publicly admit he wasn’t being truthful about having the power to do much more than he’s been doing

  6. So, about that huge announcement ….

CH, to tell you the truth, I sometimes think my dedication to transparency sometimes gets these people to soften the blow. I have to be honest with you, hearing the hospital organizations not lay out what they are doing today 100% has me nervous. It seems a lot of people are crossing their fingers and shoving their heads in the good book. A virus doesn’t care about luck or scripture. And while I am not an atheist, I do believe in science and data, and all of those signs are pointing in a different direction. You can only prepare people for the worst, when you tell them what the worst is.

Here are my thoughts. If you are going to go down the route of talking about big announcements or things you are hearing, just spell it out. This reminds me of all the “big news alert, tick tock, bombshell coming” reports that never come true.
If you dont want to go that route just don’t write about them because if they never come to fruition its “fake news”.

You could do the “anonymous sources” route that CNN, MSNBC, and New York times does for 95% of their stories, you would be in good company there. I am kidding of course because this is why they are labeled fake news because there is never a name behind anything just rumor and innuendo.

I actually was a little concerned when I read your post and took it very seriously like something really bad was going to be announced. I even went so far to “reach out” to some folks that may be in the know and they said that nothing was coming. So I would just ask, unless your not going to play spoiler and announce what you hear, just dont post it. Just my thoughts

I did get verification from employees from both hospitals they are sending non essential employees home. Still haven’t heard if they are paying the ones that don’t have the ability to work from home. I thought they would have said something in the presser yesterday about it, they did not. Also, I thought we would get more details on their plans, but I got the feeling the blue hospital is more prepared than team green. I thought they were very vague.

  17. Here’s what the worst is
    The facts:
    https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/coronavirus-disease-2019-vs-the-flu

    Infections
COVID-19: Approximately 1,026,974 cases worldwide; 245,573 cases in the U.S. as of Apr. 3, 2020.*

Flu: Estimated 1 billion cases worldwide; 9.3 million to 45 million cases in the U.S. per year.

    Deaths
COVID-19: Approximately 53,975 deaths reported worldwide; 6,058 deaths in the U.S., as of Apr. 3, 2020.*

Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.

The COVID-19 situation is changing rapidly. Since this disease is caused by a new virus, people do not have immunity to it, and a vaccine may be many months away. Doctors and scientists are working on estimating the mortality rate of COVID-19, but at present, it is thought to be higher than that of most strains of the flu.

We live in interesting times and I think some of the biggest takeaways I have from all of this is as follows:

    – The reputation the Mainstream Media has built for itself over the years of sensationalizing everything, putting out fake news, constant “anonymous” sources, and bombshells that never happen has REALLY hindered out country. I honestly don’t believe anything that comes out of their mouths and its makes me skeptical. How can we trust them to give us “real” information when they have been so full of Sh!t for years. They always have an Agenda its not in the best interest of the people, it’s about ratings.

    – China is not our friend, they are our mortal enemy and I hope every American wakes up and understands this. We have to DEMAND our companies get out of that country and we need to STOP buying their crap. The last 30+ years of reliance on them have stripped us of good jobs, quality products, and strengthened them why they slowly poison us. This is not a partisan issue our Elites and Leaders over the years have sold us out.

    – I believe the cure (shutting down everything) is going to be worse for the virus itself. If we go into a Depression due to a collapsing economy the amount of destruction, chaos, and death will be worse than Virus itself. I am not saying this lightly as I know this Virus will kill people as every Virus does but, I think its impacts will be felt for decades.

    – We are NOW seeing a “trial run” on Socialized Medicine. You cannot get into Stanford or Avera unless you have a serious issue. My wife is scheduled next week for a biopsy and a review board had to determine if she qualified as they are looking for cancer, this blew my mind as you cannot wait on that stuff. So many I know have had procedures they NEED done but, can’t because SOMEONE somewhere deemed it unnecessary. This is what it looks like and I am pretty sure the folks that were denied services due to some review board are not happy right now.

    – I am amazed at how many people in our country are ok with stripping every single freedom you have away and I am curious how long are Americans going to “sit at home” before we say enough is enough and get back to life. If a vaccine is months to a year away, do we think we can keep this up. I doubt it but, some states have basically declared Martial Law and arresting people for breaking curfew or going out YET some of these same places are letting Inmates who have been convicted, out of jail, talk about an oxymoron.

    – I think Americans may be starting to realize the difference between needs and wants. We are blessed to have the Abundance of things in this country but, do we have too much too easy? We have taken our freedoms and wealth for granted. I hope is that some folks wake up and don’t realize they have it that bad and maybe some of the things they demand or ask for are really not that important. I hope WE decided its better to support the mom and pop shop and local products vs the cheap Sh!t from China. I hope we decide or realize, maybe its ok to spend an extra 5 or 10% on that Iphone so an American can make if vs a 10 year old kid in China.

I hope some good comes out of this mess but, I am prepared for the worst as best I can and leave the rest in Gods hands. Stay safe people!

I’ll give all my toilet paper if the virus thing can be over with. What’s important is that the city is actively involved with the pandemic. No news is good news.

  21. Whats each life worth to the citizens of this country? It’s a serious question I hear people throwing around. I’m not voicing an opinion, just the math.

    Here’s the numbers:
According to the CDC estimates, if we were to do nothing the death toll would have been 2 million. The CDC estimates the death toll will be 200 thousand with our current plans.
    2M – 200K =1.8 million lives saved

Government projections indicate that the federal government will add 4 trillion dollar to the debt to fight the virus. Other projections show this current plan will cost 7 trillion total which includes federal and personal expenditures.

Lets say it will cost 6 trillion total for a 3 month shutdown.

$6 trillion spent divided by 1.8 million lives saved.

Each life saved will cost 3.8 million dollars.

BTW…The Swiss government has decided that they will do nothing but advocate social distancing for the virus. Right now Swiss life is normal with the virus being thought of as a normal flu. We will have an example to compare when this is over.

Each life saved is a taxpayer. There’s no country if we’re sick or dead.
Switzerland has always been a never mind. They’re not allied with anyone. They are secret bank accounts for the rich. Doesn’t surprise me they ignore the virus.

LJL, what kind of life is it if we all end up living without our freedoms & liberties? They keep moving that goal post of when they think the “virus” will peak (this isnt really about a virus) and now even saying it will return in the fall. Want to shelter in place for the rest of your life having Govt make all decisions for you?

And it isnt just non-essential employees furloughed from the hospitals. I know a few nurses who have had their hours greatly reduced about both hospitals and those still working are saying it has been much quieter and not a lot going on.

People need to wake up. There is a LOT more to this than just a virus.

What about that big white FEMA relocation center in the NW part of Sioux Falls? They say its for paychecks, but if there are no longer any paychecks, then what is its purpose? Are you thinking, what I am thinking?

Have you noticed that the casinos are still open, too? Probably just until the $1200 per person are all spent. They’re feeding the children via the schools, but then what? What will happen when the lunches end. What will happen when the direct deposits stop? The buses are still running. They will probably just take a few of us at a time. It will be less noticeable with social distancing as the “excuse”.

But I must go now and make dinner from the cans I have left over from the Y2K scare, which was obviously nothing but “their” dress rehearsal, for us all.
