Well we are finally seeing last year’s numbers (click on image to enlarge);

Of course there will be a formal presentation on Tuesday, a day after the Mayor’s State of the City address, you know, that FREE breakfast, baseball stadium event on Monday.

During the regular council meeting we also have some surprises.

Item #6, Sub-item #7, Approval of Contracts; Core Facade Revitalization: Historic Preservation Easement; Conditional façade easement, Blackstreet Partners, LLC, $25K (if you do a little research this LLC owns Shriver Square Downtown and are also involved with different investors with the Lucky’s building. Looks like more glue on bricks!)

19 Thoughts on “Sales Tax Revenue up 12.2% from last year in Sioux Falls

The extra $10 million could pay for the additional bridge costs. I guess I’m kinda for the bridge now. We can afford it without any skin loss…. (“I was against it before I was for it….. (…..I know I’ve heard that one before….. (?) ….”… ))

When you factor in inflation, then it’s actually about a 4% increase.

Much of the rise of sales tax dollars are thanks to the rise in population. Sales Tax is paid by ALL persons who domiciled in South Dakota, let alone in Sioux Falls. Even people who live in Arizona, but domiciled themselves in S.D (Sioux Falls) are paying sales tax to the State, let alone Sioux Falls. As for the 6th Street Bridge, the mayor himself already knew what some of the sales tax figures were coming in at, which is why is recommended delay in the Minnesota Ave project, while transfering funds to the Bridge, while reseting the Minnesota Ave project for 2024, which by the time we set our next budget, will be for the year 2024.

The federal inflation rate is 8%. It’s worse because data doesn’t catch up fast enough. A Sioux Falls family will tell you they feel it’s more like 20%. The 12% sales tax revenue increase is from cost of living not city growth. The city can’t buy goods, services, and payroll for a mere 12% increase. City projects are cost plus and there’s no catching up despite more revenue. Citizens realize money is losing value. There’s been more taxed spending before money is just paper.

Nonetheless, the 12% is an opportunity for the mayor to inaccurately boast about his terms. It’s not a gain. It’s a deeper hole.

To keep some margin, use your paper dollars to buy silver and gold American Eagle coins. They’re legal tender. There’s no tax on money, buying or selling. An added incentive is Eagles appreciate in value more than inflation and double for bank CD’s. This and similar ploys are a way to choke if not defund city government waste.

Man, I can’t wait until they get that diverging diamond done at 41st and I-29. That’s going to be so cool!…. They should also put some rotaries at each end of it just for further fun.. Then imagine approaching all of that just after you dropped some acid…

You amaze with your complete inability to understand things, and still think you’re an expert. This chart is sales tax collected in Sioux Falls. Has nothing to do with a state tax, or where people are “domiciled”. People living in another state are only paying this tax when they’re in Sioux Falls. You would really be doing yourself (and us) a favor if you stopped posting.

Not true at all, anyone who domiciles their official legal person inside S.D’s jurisdiction, as per SDCL 1-1-1, is legally forced to report all “Transactions” made anywhere in the United States. IF you are residing in Arizona, New York, or California, but your official legal person is domiciled in S.D, you are instructed by law to report ALL “transactions” to the S.D Department of Revenue. Anytime you travel outside the State, and buy goods and services in Minnesota, Iowa, or Nebraska, you as a S.D Citizen, only owe a “sales tax” to S.D. Matters not if you buy the items inside the “State” or outside the “State”.

Why would I want to pay a 8.0% Sales Tax in Arizona or Minnesota, whereas I only owe 6.5% Sales Tax in S.D

I understood very clearly where Scott’s article was speaking on, hence i said, the avg Sioux Falls resident pays $690 per year to the City of Sioux Falls.

As a Business owner, I sat in many Sales Tax Seminars, asking questions and learning the law, and I know I am correct…

The State of SOuth Dakota collects Sales Tax dollars every month from Americans residing in other States, especially from the RV’rs travleing the country, of who are domiciled in South Dakota. Each of these Americans are reporting their “FOreign Transactions” to the S.D.D.O.R electing to pay 4.5% to the State, and 2.0% to the City of Sioux Falls.

THey also do so, cause they know they are “Owed” a Tax Credit for over paying what they are legally instructed to pay.

Just like Voting Rights, “Direct Taxation” levied on Person, Land, Property, is all based on DOMICILE.

YOu want to attack, em, call me names, tell me to be quiet, only shows your ignorance. STUDY THE LAW MAN.

Mike, NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE buys a taco in Arizona and then reports that sale to the City and pays tax to Sioux Falls. No one. You’re clueless. 100%.

  9. scott on April 16, 2023 at 4:58 pm said:

yeah, all those po box residence pay sales tax to south dakota on things they buy out of state.

Do you attend Sales Tax Seminars? I do. I have saw and sat in those discussions, YES, South Dakota does in fact receive sales tax returns from Americans in other states. And you are showing your ignorance, you remit sales tax to the D.O.R, who then writes the city a check for its portion of the collections. I am getting awfully tired of Steve’s loud mouth.

What about that stuff that stays in Las Vegas? Does a guy have to pay a South Dakota usage tax on that, too?

I once bought a California Taco at a Mexican restaurant in Arizona. Then, luckily the guy sitting next to me – who used to work for Wayfair – happened to be an accountant who helped me with the receipt and how to pay for it.

I’m so hungry, I could eat a gas station taco from Arizona.

  14. Loud mouth? You’re the one who talks in all caps for no reason. The online equivalent of yelling. I was in 28 other states last year. Guess how much of the taxes I paid in those states was sent to Sioux Falls? Zero. Keep talking out of your butt, you’re certainly good at it.

  15. Mike Lee Zitterich on April 17, 2023 at 4:50 pm said:

Steve just admitted to tax evasion, cause if it is true, he is admitting to buying goods and products in 28 States, well, if the S.D.D.O.R gets word of this, they wlll be contacting him shortly…

  16. Steve on April 17, 2023 at 8:23 pm said:

Yup, I ate something in all of those 26 states. City budget won’t balance now. You still don’t understand this chart is tax collected by the City, not the State. This would all be be pretty funny if it wasn’t so sad.

Oh Stevie Boy, I am 150 x smarter than you you. I knew perfectly well, the tax table was the City 2.0% Sales Tax. Again, you show your ignorance, the State collects ALL “sales tax” from all retailers, citizens, sources, of whom remits to the CITY its ‘tax’ each month on the 15th. You love to act like a smart a***ss, but in reality, your just a small little man, who talks crap on the internet. Leave me alone, or come to my office between 2pm and 8pm

Scott, what ever happened to you directing Mike to post his drivel on his own site instead of here? I’m pretty certain no one here really cares to read his nonsense. You’ve even said so more than once.

You need to relax, enjoy life, have fun…you do nothing but attack me, and your mad when I throw it back in your face. Least I do it with some sense of class.
