Mike Huether responds to my Event Center post

Mike sent me two press releases posted on his site December 10 & 14.

12/10 • Huether Supports Events Center, Announces Opposition To Events Center Task Force Plan

Proposal Is Too Expensive, Broad in Scope

SIOUX FALLS, SD – At a press conference this morning, mayoral candidate Mike Huether reiterated his support for a new events center in Sioux Falls, but announced his opposition to a plan proposed by the Sioux Falls Events Center Task Force.  Huether made clear that while he believes the city needs a new events center, the task force proposal is too expensive and goes beyond what is needed.

“We all can agree that without the support of the public, a new events center will never be built.

I wholeheartedly believe that Sioux Falls needs a new event center as it will certainly enhance economic development and our quality of life,” said Huether.  “However the proposal as presented by the Events Center Task Force is too broad in scope and some of the recommendations amount to an irresponsible use of taxpayer money.”

Huether detailed his specific objections to three aspects of the task force proposal:

Tearing down Howard Wood Field to make room for parking and spending millions to rebuild the structure elsewhere.

Spending additional tax dollars to expand the current convention center.

The overall cost of the project, estimated at $150 million to $200 million.

“We can build a new events center at the current location for a much more reasonable price that what has been proposed,” Huether continued.  “Taxpayers want to invest in our city, but they are not frivolous – spending must be based on practicality and realistic needs.”

Despite disagreements with the final product, Huether praised the work of the Events Center Task Force.

“I truly commend the Task Force members for their sacrifice and vision.  Many of the members on the Task Force are my friends and yes, a couple of them are my neighbors.  The time and effort they put into this process needs to be recognized.  We just don’t agree on the solution this time.”

12/14 • Huether Statement on City Council Event Center Vote

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Following a 6 to 2 vote by the Sioux Falls City Council to pass a resolution adopting the plan put forth by the Events Center Task Force, Mayoral Candidate Mike Huether restated his strong support for an events center while expressing disappointment with the Council’s action.

“This vote demonstrates how out of touch city government has become with the citizens of Sioux Falls,” Huether said.  “Citizens want progress, but they want responsible progress.  Without the support of the public, a new events center will never be built.”

Huether announced his disapproval of the Task Force plan last week.  He supports building an events center but is opposed to the task force’s recommendation to razing Howard Wood Field for parking, an expansion of the existing convention center, and millions of dollars of improvements to the Sioux Falls Arena.

Huether has another ‘original’ idea?

D1189

Soooooo, did Mike come up with this idea all on his lonesome?

At a press conference this morning, Huether said he supports building a new events center seating 10,000 but that it can be done for $75 million to $100 million. The mayor’s events center task force has come forth with a proposal for a new facility that could hold as many as 15,000, expanded convention center and new hotel that could cost as much as $200 million, if a plan to relocate Howard Wood Field is included.

The 10,000 seat facility is what MPLS consulting group CSL proposed in a EC task force meeting. I think the words they used was ‘sweet spot’. At another TF meeting I was sitting next to Mike and told him that is what CSL recommended. Later in the meeting Mike asked me where the money would come from to build a new HW? I chuckled and said, “You and me.” Don’t get me wrong, I agree 100% with Mike on this, I just wanted you to know it is not an original idea, it has been floated for a long time, and the TF chose to ignore it. I also got the feeling from Mike during last week’s Mayoral Forum he isn’t on board with the funding source, he has also hinted that to me in person, because of the impact the retail tax will have on working poor. I just wish he would publicly come out and say it. So far the only candidate to publicly denounce the funding source is Staggers. I have a feeling Mike will be following suit shortly.

The KELO story is even better. It seems Peterson, Brown and Costello are have a hissy-fit over another mayoral candidate having a different (the right) idea;

“All of the candidates now, we could all play this game, we could all come out and say well, I’ll build one for, get into a bidding war and say I’ll build one for $50-million dollars, or I’ll build one for $25-million, but that doesn’t serve the citizens well,’ said Bill Peterson.

“We have to find a way to pay for it first, and then we can have the discussions about how big it should be, what the cost should be,” said Vernon Brown.

Candidate Pat Costello is a member of the events center task force. He says Huether’s pared-down version will short-change the city.

“It’s not going to have a $52-million dollar impact to our community. Could it work? Yeah. It worked 50-years ago, it’s called the arena,” said Costello.

Doesn’t matter if Mike has the right idea or not. The funding source will never pass 1) The Legislature, and 2) it won’t pass the voters.

You will see Shemp (Mike) setting himself apart from the other three stooges (Costello, Peterson, Brown) over the next couple of months. I still think it will be a battle royal between Huether and Staggers in the runoff.

This Kranz article proves it;

Most often, Staggers is getting favorable responses from those who are concerned about spending issues. But when you add other factors such as which candidates are the best known or considered to know the issues well, then the race becomes much more even.

Yet, Kranz didn’t print any of those comments? Did he? Yah wanna know why? Because they are rare. The Gargoyle has it in for Kermit, and they just can’t bring it to themselves to say something positive about him without knocking him down in the next sentence. Talk about fair and balanced reporting.

While I think a happy hour is a great way to promote yourself, I would like to tell Mike I can get a Hell of a lot of two-fers for $25 at Tommy Jacks, I’m just saying.

And while we are on the topic of Mayor races, let’s talk a little about who I am NOT supporting and WHY; Vernon Brown. While I still don’t think Brown has a chance of Hell of even making it to the runoff, I think the thing that bothers me the most about Vernon’s candidacy is the fact that he thinks he is qualified to be mayor. Why does he think that? All the other candidates besides Brown have either manergerial, economic, governmental experience or all three. In fact if you were rating the candidates on that alone this is how the list would go;

STAGGERS, PETERSON, COSTELLO, HUETHER.

Being a TV journalist and marketing director for a company, that BTW has conflicts of interest with the city, doesn’t make you qualified to be mayor – councilor maybe – but not mayor. Throw in the towel Vernon before you start looking like an indoor pool.

Another one throws their hat in the ring for the SF Mayoral race

I think I am ‘friends’ with this guy on FACEBOOK, but didn’t really pay attention, I think Epp sent me the invite;

FROM Epp

Sioux Falls businessman Mike Huether will run for mayor of Sioux Falls in 2010.

Middle Border Sun has learned this from a source close to the Huether camp.

Mike is a Yankton native and one of the top officers at Premier Bankcard.

I’ll have more details as I learn them.

I think Mike is a tremendous person and will make a topnotch leader for Sioux Falls. With skills in leadership, managing large budgets and numbers of employees, economic development, and a rags to riches personal story, he is a transformational leader. He has brought and will bring people together to keep the community moving forward.

Click here if you would like to join the Facebook fan page I’ve assembled for Mike.

I should probably do a little research on Mike and read his Facebook page, so I’ll keep my opinion to myself for now. There is one thing that does concern me though, his association with Premier Bankcard, this could be more of a detriment to his campaign then a positive. We have enough former credit card company shucksters in city hall as it is (Munson, Rowenhorst). We don’t need to go down that road again. I’m just saying.
