South DaCola art club w/ Chris Browne & Eyob Mergia
Two of my artist friends will be having shows over the next week.
Please join us at Augustana’s Eide/Dalrymple Gallery for the closing reception of “On Bunny Hill”: cartoons, watercolors and illustrations by Chris Browne this Friday, February 5, 7-9 pm. Browne is a nationally recognized cartoonist–most known for his syndicated cartoon, “Hagar the Horrible.” Browne’s true wit, however, shines in his cartoons and “gags” that he has created over several decades for publications such asĂ‚Â The New Yorker, Playboy, andĂ‚Â National Lampoon.Ă‚Â Ă‚Â The exhibition also includes his most recent watercolor paintings and children’s book illustrations.
Also mark your calendars for the following week, Friday, February 12,Ă‚Â 7-9pm, for the opening reception of “Axum: the art of Eyob Mergia.” Mergia was born inĂ‚Â Ethiopia, but now resides inĂ‚Â Sioux Falls. His newest body of work explores his identity and heritage through symbols and images fromĂ‚Â Ethiopia’s treasured monument, the Obelisk of Axum. His exhibition runs February 11- March 12.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays 12:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday; closed Sundays. Janoct will make for an interesting forum. He usually takes stands that no other politician takes, and it makes for great listening. I still remember when he ran last time for mayor and schooled the candidates that homeless people are not ‘problems’ they are ‘citizens’ of our city because they pay sales taxes just like the rest of us. You could have heard a pin drop.

No news is good news? Hardly.
Frank Kloucek’s House Bill would have eliminated conflicts of interest with University Presidents serving on corporate boards. It failed in committee yesterday, but I have been having trouble finding a story about it in the SD MSM (anybody have links?) The only news org that covered it was SDPTV last night on Statehouse. I can’t even remember the vote, but I do know it failed pretty heavily. This is disappointing, but not surprising, our legislature always puts corporations first and citizens second, business as usual as far as I am concerned. (Below is an overview of the bill by Cory and Madville Times).
SDSU President David ChicoineĂ‚Â caused a fuss last spring when he accepted a high-paying position on Monsanto’s corporate board. Senator Frank Kloucek (D-19/Scotland)Ă‚Â promised to lead a discussion of this seeming conflict of interest on the floor of the Legislature.
Senator Kloucek has his chance now withĂ‚Â House Bill 1116, which would restrict Dr. Chicoine and any other executive officer of any Regental institution making over $100,000 from almost any serious moonlighting. If HB 1116 passes, university execs could only take outside jobs that pay less than $10,000 a year. (Dr. Chicoine’s total annual salary and benefits from Monsanto: $400,000.)
Now before you chuckling Republicans start cranking up theĂ‚Â ad hominemĂ‚Â against Senator Kloucek, take a look at HB 1116’s sponsor list. Primary sponsors are RepublicanĂ‚Â Rep. Jacqueline Sly (33/Rapid City) and Democrat Senator Ryan Maher (28/Isabel). Our man Frank has his name on the bill, right next to GOP colleague Senator Gene Abdallah (10/Sioux Falls). Throw in a couple more West River conservatives like Reps. Brunner and Kopp, and Sen. Kloucek has some bipartisan backing for a really interesting discussion of conflict of interest in the highest offices of the Regental system.
